The Tottenham talisman’s future is once again up for discussion as his infamous six-year Spurs contract finally nears its end, but the man who helped him sign it is now in question
Harry Kane’s move to Manchester City was the transfer that never was back in the summer of 2021 and now the striker has been touted with the other outfit nearby in United.
The Tottenham talisman was widely expected to call time on his Spurs career two years ago to ply his trade for City, with the hope of at long last get his hands on some meaningful silverware. In the end, however, Pep Guardiola’s side refused to meet chairman Daniel Levy’s lofty demands and Kane stayed put.
Many blamed his brother and agent Charlie, who oversaw the signing of a long contract extension at Spurs, that tied Harry to North London for six years when signed back in 2018. That same deal meant in 2021, with another half still left to run on it, Levy could ask for some eyewatering figures if he was going to sell.
It led to widespread ridicule of Charlie, who was questioned over why he’d allow his ludicrously talented client to tie himself down for so long instead of making the obvious prediction that some of the game’s biggest clubs would come knocking.
There had been reports suggesting there was a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ surrounding the circumstances of Kane’s potential departure, but when the time came – Levy stood firm and told City to put up or shut up in regards to the asking price.
Things turned particularly messy when a story in The Sun emerged claiming Charlie had told people while at his wedding that his brother was on the brink of securing his move to City. It is unclear if that was a deliberate play to try and force Levy’s hand, but it didn’t work one bit.
Soon after the City debacle, various reports surfaced suggesting Harry had told his brother and his CK66 agency to take a back seat for the time being while the Spurs striker hired a new PR firm to steer the ship in regards to future negotiations.
That just about brings us up to speed when reflecting on the City debacle, but things could look drastically different now that United are on the scene and keen on a move.
For starters, Kane now has just one year left to run on that infamous six-year deal and Spurs will surely view this summer as the last realistic chance to land some big money for the club legend.
With that in mind, the Red Devils are reportedly plotting an official offer for the England skipper this summer. The news comes amid rumours that those at the top of the Spurs hierachy are losing faith in the idea of him penning another extension.
Levy is thought to have drastically slashed his asking price from the kind of figures he was demanding off of City two years ago. The Spurs chief is now holding out for around £85m, a steep decline from the £150m he was asking from the reigning Premier League champions.
Perhaps more importantly, the level of influence Charlie could have in any potential transfer is unclear as the website address once proudly boasting CK66’s sole client (Harry) now simply directs you to the website of the Spurs star.
Harry Kane has scored 15 Premier League goals this season
There are no reports suggesting he is no longer still a representative of Harry’s and CK66’s LinkedIn page remains up and available to view, so his website’s closure certainly raises eyebrows.
Plenty can change between now and the summer, but Kane’s time at Spurs appears to be coming to an end and only the duo in question will know how involved Charlie would be in facilitating a move to Manchester at the second time of asking.
