Fans troll Liverpool for signing ‘flop Man Utd targets Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez’

Liverpool fans were celebrating after Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo arrived at the club, but with both players struggling to adapt to the Premier League, Manchester United fans have been mocking their fierce rivals

Manchester United fans laid into any Liverpool supporters who gloated about signing Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

Both players featured in Jurgen Klopp ’s side’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League early kick-off. While they were not the only ones, both players proved to be very ineffective throughout the contest, with Gakpo particularly guilty of missing some good chances.

Nunez looked bright but never really looked like breaking the deadlock

United were linked with both players in the summer and January transfer windows, but were beaten to their signatures by Liverpool, who signed them for £85m and £35m respectively. However, with both players struggling since the turn of the year, United supporters have been poking fun at their fierce rivals.

“Erik ten Hag hyped up Cody Gakpo just so Liverpool could buy him, and in reality he’s terrible. Genius,” one United fan laughed on social media. “Liverpool fans don’t seem to be celebrating ‘ Manchester United targets’ £35m Gakpo and £85m Nunez signings,” another fan giggled.

“Been watching Gakpo and now you get to watch Nunez, is this what Liverpool fans have been going through,” one United fan sarcastically asked on Twitter. “Never forget Liverpool fans tried to tell us we missed out on Nunez and Gakpo. Bro we dodged a nuclear missile,” said one other smug United supporter.

Gakpo was deployed for his second Premier League start before he was replaced by Jordan Henderson in the 82nd minute. He is yet to find the back of the net in any of his four appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season.

Meanwhile, fellow forward Nunez has attracted an awful lot of criticism since his big money arrival in the summer. While his record of five goals and two assists in 14 Premier League appearances is nothing to be ashamed about, he has been guilty of missing many gilt edged chances.

His last Premier League goal came in the Reds’ 3-1 home victory against Southampton on December 11, when he netted an impressive brace. Klopp has frequently defender the Uruguayan forward when his quality has been called into question.

The jury currently remains out on Gakpo due to the fact he only joined the club from PSV Eindhoven at the start of January.
