Liverpool or Tottenham could agree the ‘bargain of the summer’ by signing a 13-goal striker for free at the end of the season, according to a report.
Liverpool only completed one significant transfer in the January window, with Cody Gakpo moving to Anfield from Dutch club PSV. He cost an initial £35million, according to The Guardian, though his transfer could eventually be worth £45m depending on add-ons.
The forward has made five appearances for Liverpool so far. However, he is yet to register a goal or assist.
Tottenham, meanwhile, brought in two senior players during the winter window. Dutch attacker Arnaut Danjuma joined on loan from Villarreal. Spurs have the option to sign him permanently in the summer, should he impress.
Pedro Porro’s transfer to the north London club was confirmed on deadline day. Spurs have agreed to pay his full £40m release clause, though they were initially told they could get him for far less.
Spurs also raided London rivals Chelsea for 19-year-old striker Jude Soonsup-Bell. But he is not yet ready for senior football and will continue his development with Spurs U21s.
Both Liverpool and Spurs will now be looking ahead to potential summer signings. And one brilliant opportunity could emerge in the form of Marcus Thuram.
The centre-forward was expected to complete a cut-price transfer away from Borussia Monchengladbach in January. This is because his Gladbach contract expires in the summer, so it was the German team’s last chance to receive any money for him.
Striker looking ahead to free transfer
Despite links with Chelsea and Manchester United, Thuram did not go anywhere. Due to this, he will spend the rest of the campaign at Gladbach before moving as a free agent this summer.
Thuram is enjoying a great season, having found the back of the net 13 times in just 19 matches so far. As such, he will be sought after by teams across Europe.
Sport Witness have given an update on where he may go next, while citing Spanish outlet AS. They call the potential to sign Thuram on a free one of the ‘bargains of the summer’.
Atletico Madrid want to snap the 25-year-old up to improve their striker ranks. He would rival the likes of Alvaro Morata, Memphis Depay and Antoine Griezmann for a starting spot up front.
However, they will face plenty of competition from the Premier League for the signing. Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal are all interested in Thuram too.
The report reveals how one of those teams can win the race for his signature. He will decide his next club based on where he will play the most football and where he will earn the most money.
The financial aspect will probably rule Atleti out. After all, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal will all be able to offer him better wages.
Thuram will then have to assess his Premier League options and work out where he should play the most.
This will be a hard decision. Liverpool recently spent big money on Darwin Nunez, Spurs have fan-favourite Harry Kane up front and Arsenal can rely on Gabriel Jesus. But whichever club lands Thuram, they will be getting a high-quality striker for an exceptionally low cost.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have joined Liverpool in the chase for a world-class midfielder, according to reports.
