Tottenham Hotspur are bracing themselves for further interest in Harry Kane this summer, but have already made one decision about his future, according to a report.
Kane recently broke Jimmy Greaves’ record as Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer. The next record he might have his eyes on is the all-time Premier League chart. He needs 60 more goals to match Alan Shearer’s long-standing record in that regard.
There have been a couple of concerns, though. First, Kane has become a target for some foreign clubs, like Bayern Munich. Obviously, leaving the Premier League at this stage of his career would end his dreams of catching Shearer, unless he was to return later down the line.
Alternatively, even if he does stay in the Premier League, it might not be with Tottenham. His contract there will only have one year left to run on it by the time the summer comes around.
Domestic rivals like Manchester United have shown some interest in Kane. The Red Devils need a new centre-forward as they continue to evolve their attack.
Hence, Tottenham could be under pressure unless they manage to convince Kane to renew his contract. On that front, he is openly predicting there will be conversations in the next few months.
And now, new information is filtering through from The Times about how Tottenham might respond to certain offers for Kane in the summer.
According to the report, Tottenham “will not sell him to a rival” at the end of the season. In other words, if he is to stay in the Premier League next term, it will have to be with Spurs.
Therefore, Man Utd appear unlikely to succeed if they make any bids for Kane. Tottenham seem ready to hold a similar stance to what they did two years ago, when it was Manchester City trying to prise the England captain away.
Tottenham hoping to convince Harry Kane to stay
Their stance on selling to someone like Bayern Munich might be different. But surely Spurs would still be reluctant to see their best player leave.
At the age of 29, Kane still has plenty left in the tank. If he stays in the Premier League, he is more than capable of overtaking Shearer as the competition’s record goalscorer. It might be a matter of when, not if.
But the question has continued to linger about the lack of medals in Kane’s cabinet. If Tottenham aren’t able to provide him with any major honours, might he regret not moving elsewhere?
Becoming their record scorer, and then potentially the Premier League’s, would still ensure his legacy. But there are plenty of factors for him to consider before putting pen to paper on any new deal in north London.
If he is having any thoughts about joining Man Utd, though, he may as well stop them now if Daniel Levy is once again unwilling to do business with another Premier League side.
For Tottenham to really emphasise to Kane that they are the place to be, they must focus on trying to finish in the top four – which they are just outside of at present – again.
