Chelsea news: Graham Potter’s replacement is expected to be Jurgen Klopp as transfer rumors are stifled

Graham Potter is failing at Chelsea, and a former England striker predicts that if Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool, Chelsea will be interested in hiring the German to replace him.

Graham Potter built the Brighton team that gave Jurgen Klopp his 'worst ever game' and now faces him with Chelsea, looking to inflict more misery on the Liverpool boss who called him

You can’t spend your way out of trouble… something Chelsea fans are well aware of.

The Blues have been the biggest spenders in Europe since Todd Boehly’s consortium completed a takeover of the club last summer – investing more than £550million into the squad. Yet Graham Potter’s side find themselves ninth in the Premier League table.

Chelsea have also been dumped out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. The Champions League is their last chance to win a trophy this season – and perhaps their best opportunity of qualifying for next season’s edition. It is not an easy time to be a Blues fan.

Chelsea’s Premier League woes aside, here are the latest headlines from Stamford Bridge…

Chelsea interested in Klopp?

Former Premier League striker Stan Collymore believes Chelsea will be interested in appointing Jurgen Klopp if Liverpool decide to part company with their successful boss.

Klopp has won seven trophies during his seven-year spell at Anfield – including the Champions League – but is under pressure with Liverpool struggling in the Premier League. The Reds are ninth in the table – 11 points behind Newcastle in fourth with a game in hand.

Despite Liverpool’s woes, Collymore thinks Chelsea would snap up Klopp in a heartbeat. “The reality is, if FSG [Liverpool’s owners] sack Klopp, there is no one else out there better equipped to do a better job,” Collymore told Caught Offside.

“So anyone calling for him to go should be careful what they wish for because I’m certain that if he suddenly became available, you’d have Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG and even Chelsea all lining up… I still don’t think Jurgen Klopp should be facing the sack.”

Brighton praised for Caicedo stance

Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk has praised his employers after they refused to sell Moises Caicedo to Arsenal and Chelsea in January.

Both clubs saw substantial offers rejected for the 21-year-old midfielder, who is enjoying a breakthrough season in the Premier League. Caicedo was keen to complete a move and asked Brighton to accept a “record transfer fee for Brighton” after Arsenal’s late bid.

Yet Brighton said no. “Obviously it was a difficult situation for him [Caicedo] and these things happen in football,” Dunk told talkSPORT. “It’s not the first and won’t be the last time players at a football club have this going on over their head.

“He’s a young boy and we stick with him. He’s a great lad and obviously a fantastic player. Who knows how long we’ll have him for and we’re grateful to have him for at least the rest of the season and hopefully for longer.”

Chelsea woes made obvious by City

Manchester City are dominating the headlines at the moment after they were charged with more than 100 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules.

The Premier League completed their four-year investigation into City’s finances on Monday and the case will now be presented to an independent commission. If found guilty, City could be face a points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League.

Why does this matter to Chelsea? Well, if City are found guilty and deducted points, Chelsea could make up some ground in the race for a top-four finish.

Tellingly, though, the Blues would still be behind City in the table if Pep Guardiola’s side were deducted 15 points. They would also still be nine points off the top-four. It is reminder of how much Chelsea have struggled to pick up Premier League wins this season.
