Having not played a match, Chelsea ‘distorted’ because of successor Reece James

Malo Gusto made the switch to Stamford Bridge in January before returning to Lyon on loan, and has now suffered what looks to be a hamstring injury in the Coupe de France

Chelsea January signing Malo Gusto has received a potential injury problem as the youngster was substituted in the first half of Lyon’s clash with Lille on Wednesday. The full-back came off after the half hour mark in the match, appearing to hold his hamstring as he exited the pitch.

It remains to be seen how severe the injury is to the 19-year-old, though if it is diagnosed as an issue with his hamstring, lower grade issues could see him back in action relatively soon, while larger problems could see him out for anywhere between two and eight weeks. Both clubs will be hopeful it isn’t the latter, with his progression key at this stage of his career.

Gusto signed for the Blues in January from Lyon in a deal worth roughly £26.6million, offering plenty of potential as well as another option at right-back. Given the injury troubles of Reece James in that area and the lack of ball progression or attacking threat through Cesar Azpilicueta, it could be smart business for the squad.

Upon signing for Chelsea, Gusto said: “I like the city [London]. I am really really happy to come here. I chose Chelsea because it’s a very big club and I like the project. I am very happy to be here. Thank you for your messages. See you soon.”

The defender was then sent back on loan to Lyon for the remainder of the season, having been an important player to the side that they didn’t want to lose. This would also allow Gusto to progress with more playing time that may not be available straight away to him at Stamford Bridge.

However, news of his injury and the potential for time on the sidelines will be a concern to both Chelsea and Lyon as they nervously await the outcome.
