The incident occurred just after the hour mark at Old Trafford following a heavy tackle from Jeffrey Schlupp on Antony.

A number of players from both teams were involved in a subsequent scuffle during which a red card was shown to Casemiro. The video assistant referee recommended the on-field referee, Andre Marriner, to watch the VAR footage after he had not spotted it in real time.

The Brazil international was sent off after the video evidence showed Marriner that Casemiro had committed a violent conduct offence by placing his hands around the neck of Crystal Palace midfielder Will Hughes.

“Manchester United FC and Crystal Palace FC have been charged following a mass confrontation between their players in the 67th minute of the Premier League fixture on Saturday February 2023,” an FA statement on Thursday read.

Casemiro’s red card explained – the incident and the implications

“It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour, and it’s also alleged that Manchester United FC failed to ensure its players refrained from violent behaviour.

“Manchester United FC and Crystal Palace FC have until Monday 13 February to respond.”

At the time of the incident, Erik ten Hag’s side were leading 2-0. Schlupp halved the deficit soon after Casemiro’s red card but Manchester United were able to hold on for all three points.
