38-year-old Carmelo Anthony is long removed from his prime. In fact, after finishing out his season with the Lakers in 2022, Melo has yet to make an NBA roster and many believe he may never get the chance again.
But in a recent chat with Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson, Melo got an endorsement from a surprising superstar: Suns swingman Kevin Durant. Here’s what he said:
“I think he has the talent to play in our league,” KD said on the Knicks legend.
Anthony wouldn’t be a major piece for any team at this stage of his career, but his experience and scoring expertise could be valuable in the right situation. Could Phoenix, with Kevin Durant, be that situation?
After trading the farm for Durant, the Suns lack the depth they once had and there are some concerns in NBA circles about whether or not they have a supporting cast that’s strong enough to compete with the Celtics, Bucks, Clippers, and other deep teams.
At the very least, Anthony is capable of bringing a punch off the bench that could really help the Suns.
Chris Paul Wants Suns To Sign Melo
Interestingly, KD isn’t the only one to make a push for the 10x All-Star. Earlier this month, Suns insider Landon Buford reported that Chris Paul was also in support of adding Carmelo.
Paul and Melo, of course, are part of the infamous banana-boat crew that also includes LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. They are close friends off the court and had their peaks at the same time through the 2000s and early 2010s.
While Melo has already played with James in Los Angeles, he has also played with Chris Paul as well. Back in 2018, he was on the Rockets with James Harden and CP before infamously getting cut just 10 games into the season.
Paul apparently wasn’t turned off by that failed experiment, but this is a different situation in Phoenix. Paired with Durant, Devin Booker, and Deandre Ayton (among others), the Suns might just have enough around Carmelo to make up for his deficiencies.
Admittedly, it would be cool to see Melo back in the league and in a real position to win a ring. In Phoenix, the Suns could provide him one last chance to get it done before his career is over for good.
