The wealthy continue to accumulate wealth, as is common in today’s society. That is the current NBA reality following the acquisition of Kevin Durant by the Phoenix Suns in a significant blockbuster transaction.
Even after breaking the internet, the Suns may still not be done making moves. Apparently, according to NBA insider Ian Begley, Durant could push his new team to add veteran sharpshooter Carmelo Anthony before the start of the playoffs this spring.
“At at least one point in his tenure in Brooklyn, Kevin Durant saw [Carmelo Anthony] as a great roster addition. With Durant in Phoenix, that’s something I’d keep an eye on.”
Durant won’t be a game-changer for Phoenix and he probably won’t get a whole lot of minutes, but he can still bring a lot of positives to the right situation. When we saw him last in Los Angeles, he was a solid bench contributor with averages of 13.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1 assist per game on 44% shooting.
Durant and Anthony didn’t cross paths often during the regular season, but they have linked up several times through Team USA and NBA All-Star weekend. Clearly, they have developed a bond and Durant still sees Melo as someone who can help the Suns win a title this season.
To The Suns Have Enough Depth To Go All The Way?
Trading for Durant was a no-brainer for new owner Mat Ishbia, but it did come at a cost for Phoenix, who had to give up Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder, and Cam Johnson.
Now, people are questioning if their bench rotation could become a real problem for the Suns who are suddenly much thinner than they’ve been used to in the Chris Paul era.
By adding Anthony, Phoenix could benefit from another perimeter threat and veteran presence on the floor. If not, maybe they could look at other buyout candidates to increase their depth and add some versatility off the bench.
Regardless of what Phoenix does moving forward, they should have enough top-end talent to make up for a weak bench unit but only time will tell us if it will be enough to win it all.
