Julian Smith, a noted bodybuilder, while reviewing various bodybuilding moments from movies, came across one of the toughest training regimes from the 2017 movie Baywatch. Balancing himself through various obstacles, Zac Efron’s stunt performance in that scene clearly impressed Smith. However, noting that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was there in the film (& the scene) too, he right away commented on the 260 lbs former WWE hunk. Smith believes that Johnson might not have been able to do that. Here’s why.
During this scene breakdown for GQ Sports in 2020, Smith said how hard it is to do such bodyweight exercises. And the Rock, with his heavy, muscular physique, might not cut it. Here’s Smith’s detailed summary of the scene.
Smith believes this workout is not everyone’s cup of tea
“These types of movements are so damn hard,” said Smith after watching Zac Efron, with his incredible physique in full display. He was balancing the weight of his whole body on each rod as he moved forward. Explaining the difficulty of such training, Smith continued, “Very endurance performance-based. A lot of people don’t realize how hard bodyweight exercises are because they are not really in the grasp of how heavy their body is. You have to train for this type of training.”
Soon after, he said about Dwayne Johnson, “The Rock, who is in great shape, I don’t think you see him do any of this stuff. You see him do different moves later, but to get up there and hold yourself and crawl around like that, you can’t just bench press, squat, and go jog five miles a day, and expect to get good at walking along with pegs and holding yourself up.“
Doing such activity requires being in good shape, while maintaining a lightweight. Agility and flexibility also do come in handy. Smith wasn’t deliberately being derisive about the Mummy star, but merely pointing out the exact physical needs for such a workout. He said, “It’s a very specific type of training that you need to get good at for this.” Although a rare instance when Johnson faces the negative side of things, he was also recently trolled by the fans.
This is a rare instance where The Rock could’ve possibly faltered
Dwayne Johnson failed to catch a Zoa energy can while driving a golf cart, and the fans didn’t leave him rest for it. In the Instagram post shared by The Brahma Bull, The Rock got hilariously trolled for missing a simple catch. But the calm and composed Johnson presumably just let it chill.
Johnson is 6’5″ tall and hunky, whereas Zac Efron is 5’8 and has a muscular-yet-lean body. This could quite well be the clincher for Effron, as to why he could train and successfully do it, as Smith believes. Smith, however, said that The Rock could actually do other kinds of exercises which require heavy mass. Johnson and Effron were seen lifting tires in the next scene, and although Effron did it, The Rock looked effortless at it.
