One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda’s experimentation with an AI-written chapter ties into a larger controversy about the validity of artificial art.
As the writer of the iconic One Piece, Eiichiro Oda has long been praised for his creative abilities, which is why it’s surprising that he’d experiment with A.I. generated content. Keeping such a long story going would be a challenge for even the best of writers, but Oda still manages to keep One Piece exciting and relevant despite it being the longest-running comic series ever written by a single author. However, writing the same story for 26 years is no doubt exhausting. That might be why the mangaka recently revealed that he has been dabbling in A.I.
Oda has shown himself to be interested in AI in the past, even using an AI filter on his own One Piece artwork. However, the subject of artificial intelligence has been a hot topic on the internet as of late. With A.I. filters and art generators becoming popular on social media apps like TikTok, many artists have taken to the internet to debate the ethics of such technology while others are rushing to try it out. Eichiiro Oda’s recent post on Twitter showing an AI writing a One Piece chapter is his latest use of the technology, but many fans aren’t sure how to feel about it.

The tweet, posted on the 22nd of February, featured an AI writing a new chapter of One Piece after being asked the “forbidden question”‘ by Oda. Surprisingly, the A.I. does a decent enough job writing the first story, featuring the kidnap and rescue of Chopper. However, the second story doesn’t make much sense, with Nico Robin going off on a strange adventure to search out a tribe. The stories also don’t match up with the current storyline in One Piece, making it obvious that the A.I. was pulling its inspiration from older chapters. Still, Oda found the story funny and even replied to the AI saying that he would write the chapter that way.
This action proved to be a controversial moment for the One Piece author. The reactions from fans after this tweet have been split, with some fans finding the content funny, while other fans express their disappointment that the writer would use A.I., even if it is in such an unofficial capacity. While most fans understand that Oda was likely just playing around with the AI to see what it could do, there were fans to criticized his choice to use A.I. as an artist and creator despite knowing that A.I. generators have been accused of stealing art from smaller creators.
There is no chance that Eiichiro Oda is going to use A.I. to replace his own work as author of One Piece. Still, his use of A.I. to write a new chapter has opened up even more conversations about whether creators should use this technology. In order to appease fans, it would be smart for Oda to clarify that he will never actually use A.I. to write in the future. After all, A.I. will never be able to do One Piece justice like he does.
