Eiichiro Oda has dropped minor hints about the mysterious Void Century throughout One Piece – and they’re all connected to the Final Saga in some way.
Eiichiro Oda has built a dynamic and expansive realm in One Piece — and it’s all based on a mysterious history that no one really knows about. Oda has done an excellent job of keeping almost everything about the Void Century hidden from fans, all the while increasing their curiosity with each new arc. Although the story has dropped minor hints along the way, precious little is actually known about it. With each passing arc, however, the protagonists get closer to the truth.
Everything that’s happened in One Piece is somehow connected to the Void Century. Its fascinating mysteries include the governing organization, the powers of Devil Fruits, and isolated islands such as Zou, Fish-Man Island and Wano. The last island definitely has some connection to the past since Gol D. Roger mentioned Joy Boy after arriving there. Upon a closer look, the Void Century’s mysterious history has actually laid down the foundation for the entire story.
What One Piece Fans Know About the Void Century So Far
The Void Century is a 100-year gap in history that is hidden from One Piece‘s world. The study of anything related to it is strictly forbidden by the World Government, so much so that they would even blow up an island to keep the truth hidden. Considering how they came into power during that time, the story hints that the World Government must have committed some serious atrocities in the past. Deciphering the Poneglyphs — the only way to know more about the Void Century’s mysterious history — is considered a serious offense.
The Void Century took place 800-900 years before One Piece‘s current storyline, and many believe it is the world’s “true history”. The most important event of this time period is the Great War, the reason Shandora is now in ruins. The mysterious Great Kingdom was also overthrown by an alliance of the twenty kingdoms during that time.
Those twenty kingdoms later came together to establish the World Government and placed an empty throne as a symbol to maintain peace and equality between nations. Fish-Man Island, Wano Country and Skypiea are known to have major historical contributions to the events that occurred in the Void Century. Furthermore, Joy Boy is an important figure and bears some resemblance to protagonist Monkey D. Luffy.
Every Major Event in One Piece Traces Back to the Void Century
One Piece‘s first mention of anything related to the Void Century came in the “Alabasta” saga, where Nico Robin introduced the Poneglyphs and their importance. The one in Alabasta mentioned the location of Pluton — one of the ancient weapons — which fans learned more about in the “Wano” arc. The “Sky Island” saga revealed a Poneglyph leading to the ancient weapon known as Poseidon, while the “Water 7” arc showed Robin’s backstory and Professor Clover’s goal to find the truth behind the Great Kingdom.
After the series’ time-skip, the first ancient weapon was then introduced in the “Fish-Man Island” saga, where fans also learned more about the Great War and the fall of Shandora. Further on, the “Whole Cake Island” arc revealed the connection between the Kozuki Clan and the Poneglyphs. The very purpose of characters like Noah, the Mermaid Princess and the Sea Kings will all have a major role to play in the Final Saga.
Finally, the Straw Hats’ adventures in Wano revealed Luffy’s “real” Devil Fruit and its mysterious connection with Joy Boy. Every minor or major mention of anything related to the Void Century has some connection to One Piece‘s Final Saga, thus showing how incredibly crucial it is to the story’s entire foundation — despite fans still knowing so little about it.
