It seems like Leo Messi still doesn’t get enough recognition – even while being the best player in history of football.
On Saturday, the Argentine national team’s training camp was renamed after Messi. This is the first big thing named after Leo.
Cristiano Ronaldo, in turn, has at least 4 things named after him.
The first one is Aeroporto Internacional da Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo – the international airport located on Madeira, the island where the Portuguese was born.
It was renamed in 2017 in honour of Madeira-born footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.
The airport serves as a hub for several airlines, connecting Madeira to destinations across Europe and the Atlantic.
The second and the third things are Praca CR7 and Museu CR7 – the square and the museum named after Cristiano, also on Madeira. The museum is located right on this square.
The Museu CR7 is a museum dedicated to the life and career of Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is located in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, and showcases memorabilia and artefacts from Ronaldo’s personal and professional life, including his childhood, his rise to fame, and his achievements as a footballer.
The museum provides visitors with an interactive and immersive experience, including multimedia displays, interactive games, and personal items belonging to Ronaldo, such as his Ballon d’Or awards and his Portugal national team shirts.
The Museum CR7 is a tribute to one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Finally, there is the Cosmos Redshift 7 (CR7) galaxy inspired by Ronaldo – one of the oldest and the most distant galaxies. Some of its researchers were from the University of Lisbon, so maybe it was primarily their own idea to name such a huge space thing after Cristiano.
In 2015, astronomers, led by David Sobral, a Reader in Astrophysics at the University of Lancaster, used the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the European Southern Observatory, with help from the W. M. Keck Observatory, Subaru Telescope and the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, made the discovery.
The research team included members of the University of California, Riverside, University of Geneva, University of Leiden and the University of Lisbon.
The name of the galaxy (Cosmos Redshift 7 Galaxy or CR7 Galaxy) was inspired by Ronaldo himself.
Of course, we should expect Barcelona to name one of their streets or squares after Messi… but this is clearly not enough to catch up with Cristiano.
