The NFL made some huge waves as they recently announced some major changes to their playbook. According to the recent rule changes, teams can be scheduled for two Thursday Night Football games per season instead of the previous rules of only one.
Earlier the Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes expressed his disagreement with the new rule by taking to Twitter. Not just Mahomes but several other NFL stars came out criticizing the changes. Since then, Patrick Mahomes’ mother Randi Mahomes has also taken a rather subtle jab at the changes, drawing parallels to her own life.
Randi Mahomes with the sly remarks
Patrick Mahomes was one of the first NFL athletes to oppose the recent rule changes.
As reported by NFL Insider for Pro Football Focus, Ari Meirov, “The NFL announced that teams can now have two Thursday Night Football games per season. The earlier limit was one. Now that’s changed. Flexing for TNF is not happening … for now.”
With Mahomes vehemently opposing the changes, his mother Randi Mahomes also shared a rather cryptic message.
If I’m physically still at work, watching Mia play tennis, can it count as overtime?? 🎾🎾🎾😂

“If I’m physically still at work, watching Mia play tennis, can it count as overtime??” read Randi Mahomes tweet, hinting at the overcrowded schedule for Thursday Night Football.
The revamped schedule will allow teams even lesser time for preparation and rests, amplifying the chances of athletes getting injured. Instead of words, Patrick Mahomes went along with an emoji that expressed his opinion all too clearly. Mahomes responded to Meirov’s report with a facepalm emoji, and his displeasure makes complete sense to most in the NFL community.
However, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell tried explaining that the decision was in fact in favor of the players, “I don’t think we’re putting Amazon over our players, The data doesn’t show a higher injury rate.’. … I hear from players who also love the 10 days after a Thursday Night game. We have to try to balance all of it. ”
Having established their dominance as one of the top-tier teams in the league, the Chiefs are most likely to receive two Thursday Night Football matchups, and that seems to be Mahomes’ primary concern.
A few other rules were altered as well
In addition to tweaking the TNF schedule, the NFL brought along a few other changes as well. The Philadelphia Eagles proposed to the NFL to allow the number 0 to be used on jerseys, and the NFL has responded positively. Players have the option to take the number ‘0’, while the numbers o-49 and 90-99 have been reserved for the kickers and punters.
Guardian caps have been made compulsory for every single preseason, regular season, and postseason practice. These same caps were earlier seen during the NFL training camps. The offensive and defensive linemen, linebackers and tight ends are required to wear these caps at all times during a practice session.
The NFL went on to clarify the use of the helmet against an opponent, prohibiting forcible contact to an opponent’s head or neck area. If any player ‘rams’ into another player using their helmet, a foul is to be called immediately.
