Kevin Durant isn’t just a 2x champion and former MVP, he’s also a true student of the game. Even when he’s dominating the competition, he’s always studying film to soak in as much knowledge as possible.
Specifically, Durant admitted to watching film of Kobe and Michael Jordan, among others, to help broaden his perspective on the game.
“I’m watching college more so than anything. A lot of NBA stuff too. A lot of MJ (Michael Jordan), a lot of Kob’ (Kobe Bryant),” said Durant, via The Athletic. “I watch a lot of MJ highlights. It’s always good to see what’s going on from the outside perspective. When you’re in the game, it’s hard to figure out what’s going on around you, so you look at film and it gives you a clearer view. It also looks at other players.”
Durant is a uniquely gifted offensive player and there are no limits to the way he can score. Still, when it comes to the mid-range, it’s clear that Durant takes inspiration from guys like Jordan and Kobe, who were masters in that area of the court.
“It’s hard to fill them shoes and to be a Kobe Bryant. But Kobe is somebody I’ve been around and still study to this day, and basically, I just try to copy everything he does, same with Michael Jordan,” KD said. “Those two guys just set the tone for everything you want to be as basketball players. So, I simply just try to copy them as much as I can.”
Will Durant Win Another Title?
Thanks to his relentless work ethic, Durant continues to be a high-impact star capable of putting up big numbers. This season, through 43 games, he’s averaging 29.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game on about 56% shooting.
Unfortunately, with only four games played on the Suns, it remains to be seen if the team can build enough chemistry this season to make a significant run.
After that, there are questions about how long Durant can sustain this level of play. But if he takes some notes from guys like Bryant, LeBron, and others, he should find a similar degree of long-term success.
