A curious leopard was hypnotized by a mirror in a remote area of a Gᴀʙᴏɴese jungle.
Motion-activated cameras captured the leopard’s replies. Animals typically find it quite difficult to recognize themselves.
When the leopard first stood in front of the mirror, it was unsure of what it was. In front of him, he seemed to think there was another leopard. The leopard approached his reflection, growling and even adopting an aggressive stance. Eventually, he realized that he was seeing himself.
He stared at the mirror until a herd of elephants came up behind him to scare him away. He was their natural predator, and they wanted to make sure he was afraid of them.
The leopard stayed put, waiting for the elephants to move away from the mirror rather than running away. The elephants in the mirror’s circle didn’t seem to notice their own reflections.
As soon as the elephants moved back into the tree line, the leopard went back to the mirror. He still valued the value of his reflection. The leopard also sprawled in front of the mirror. He had become accustomed to seeing in the mirror and was mesmerized by his looks.
