Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are under investigation by child protective services over a photo of their 13-year-old daughter Willow lying on a bed with her friend, Moises Arias, 20, according to a report.
The controversial black and white snap, which was posted on social media, depicted former Hannah Montana actor Moises shirtless with Willow slouched fully clothed in front of him.
Willow’s mother Jada, 42, defended the image earlier this month, saying there was ‘nothing sexual about it’.
Now the Los Angeles Department of Children And Family Services has launched a probe, according to RadarOnline.
The website reports the investigation was launched last week and that Will, 45, and Jada have been ‘extremely cooperative’.
A source told the website: ‘Social workers will also be talking separately with Willow, and they also want to talk to the young man in the picture with her as well.
‘This won’t just be one or two visits with the family, and it will likely be an open investigation for at least a month, out of an abundance of caution.’
MailOnline has contacted both Will and Jada’s representatives and awaits comment.
Moises posted the picture earlier this month on social media. It was then noticed on their friend Kylie Jenner’s Tumblr account, leading to a media furor.
When asked about the photo, Jada lashed out at photographers and videographers as she arrived at Los Angeles Internation Airport on May 7.
Speaking in a video on TMZ she said: ‘Here’s the deal. There was nothing sexual about that picture of that situation. You guys are projecting your trash onto it … and your acting like covert paedophiles and that’s not cool.’
One the same day Willow’s brother Jaden Smith, 15, made a show of solidarity to his sister when he was spotted out and about with Moises.
The pair, along with some of their other friends, were seen grabbing a bite to eat at Sugarfish Sushi in Calabasas.
TMZ also cited sources at the time as saying Will and Jada had ‘no issue’ with the b&w boudoir snap since Willow is ‘very mature.’
The Hollywood couple of 15 years considered the image – which has since been taken down – as ‘an expression of art’ and ‘innocent fun.’
‘We don’t do punishment,’ Will told Metro last year.
‘The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been – it has a little too much of a negative quality.
‘You can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life.’
And when fans were outraged in 2012 over the homeschooled pre-teen’s extreme hairstyles, Jada wrote on Facebook: ‘I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain.’
Willow’s music video for Summer Fling also came under attack last year due to her casting a visibly older onscreen love interest.
‘Just for clarity, the word fling means something that’s short lived,’ the Whip My Hair hitmaker told Queen Latifah last September.
‘And this song is dedicated to all the kids around the world whose summer is never long enough.’
