Tom Holland took to Instagram to explain his recent social media absence. The MCU star explained that he finds platforms like Twitter and Instagram to be “overstimulating” and he’s taking a social media break for his mental health.
He called social media “overwhelming,” explaining, “I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online. Ultimately it’s very detrimental for my mental state.” Tom goes on to share that he’s deleted the apps.
The Spider-Man star then highlights stem4, a mental health-focused organization supported by his Brothers Trust charity. Tom explains that Brothers Trust is supporting stem4 because there continues to be an “awful stigma surrounding mental health.” Addressing this continued stigma, Tom says, “Asking for help and seeking help isn’t something we should be ashamed of, but it is something that is much easier said than done.”
In the video, Tom highlights the multiple mental health apps, which he also personally uses, available through stem4. The apps available through the organization are certainly worth checking out, and there are other similar resources also available to use. Depending on your mental health needs, you may find that Calm, as well as Headspace could be helpful. For even more mental health apps, use this helpful list provided by the University of California, San Francisco.
The video message from Tom has resonated with many on Instagram. Justin Bieber commented, “Love you man,” while fans responded with messages of appreciation, including one who wrote, “Thank you so much for spreading awareness about mental health.”
There’s noting wrong with taking a break from social media. Finding ways of improving your mental health comes to down individual need and what will ultimately make you feel better. There is no one method of treatment that will work for everyone, but there are plenty of resources and options available. Don’t forget that you can always turn to a trusted adult, friend, therapist, or medical professional for further help, too.
