Chapter #1080 of One Piece breaks a series record by introducing five new Devil Fruits belonging to Blackbeard’s Captains and to SWORD’s commanders.
Chapter #1080 of One Piece introduces five brand-new Devil Fruits, breaking every previous record for a single chapter of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling series. After this, fans of One Piece know the Devil Fruit powers for every titanic Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates (except Lafitte), and for the prominent members of SWORD, a secret branch of the Navy.
In chapter #1080 of One Piece, the focus of the story moves to Pirate Island, the base of the Blackbeard Pirates, which is under a surprise attack by Luffy’s grandfather Garp, who is trying to save his protégé Koby, currently a prisoner of Blackbeard who wants to use him as a bargaining chip with the Navy. In this chaotic battle, the Devil Fruit powers for the Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates currently on the island are revealed, including Avalo Pizaro, Vasco Shot, and Sanjuan Wolf, plus those of the main members of SWORD who came to rescue Koby, Rear Admirals Prince Grus and Kujaku.
Five New Devil Fruits In A Single Chapter Is A One Piece Record
Devil Fruits are one of the most iconic One Piece features, and one of the two main sources of supernatural powers in the series (the other being Haki). Devil Fruits are also one of the biggest mysteries in the series, which has begun to be unveiled only recently, after the introduction of the leading expert in the field, Dr. Vegapunk. Usually, the specific abilities of a Devil Fruit user are kept a secret by Oda until the last possible time, but he has been a lot more prodigal in recent times, perhaps because the pace of the story has significantly sped up since One Piece entered its final saga.
The Blackbeard Pirates have all eaten a Devil Fruit, which makes them one of the most dangerous groups in the One Piece world. The only Blackbeard Captain whose powers remain a mystery is Lafitte, and Oda is probably saving that reveal for a meaningful moment in the story. This chapter also gave fans more information about SWORD, a secretive branch of the Navy, described as “wild-card commandos” who don’t have to wait for permission from their superiors to act. This is why they were quick to mobilize to save their companion Koby, after Garp showed up to recruit them for this mission. Both Kujaku and Grus have original and powerful Devil Fruit abilities, but they pale in comparison to the incredible Conqueror Haki power shown by Garp in this chapter.
There is a chance that showing so many Devil Fruits together served to actually highlight the power of Garp’s Conqueror Haki attack even more, as many characters in the series (including Kaido) have stated that Haki is the superior form of power that is needed to really stand at the top of the One Piece world. Still, revealing five new Devil Fruits in a single chapter is a record for One Piece, and it really shows the change of pace that happened since Oda announced the story had entered its final stretch (which will still take years to complete).
