Captain America is one of the most prized possessions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a particular fan-favorite when it comes to superheroes. And Chris Evans’ portrayal of the same has been lauded for years before he stepped down as Steve Rogers and passed the baton to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Time and again though, rumors have sparked up various discussions concerning Evans’ potential return to Marvel but the possibility of it remained bleak at large.
Now, however, it looks like there might just be a ray of hope for fans to clutch onto after all, as the man himself teases a prospective MCU comeback.
Chris Evans Talks About the Idea of A Potential MCU Return
During his recent appearance on Good Morning America for promoting his forthcoming film with Ana de Armas titled Ghosted, Chris Evans was asked to share his two cents on the prospect of picking up Captain America’s shield again. The topic came up after Evans talked about some of the cameos in Ghosted that involve his old MCU buddies and co-stars, claiming that it was a “great” little reunion.
On the subject of his hypothetical return as Steve Rogers, the MCU veteran admitted that for him to come back, it would have to happen “for the right reasons” and at the right time. At present, however, it would simply feel rushed especially because Anthony Mackie has already donned the superhero suit for the foreseeable future.
“To come back, it would have to be for the right reasons, right timing. It feels a little too soon. Anthony Mackie is Captain America right now. There are other stories to tell. For now, we ended on such a good note. I would be too worried about tarnishing…”
Even though Evans is hesitant about reviving the character, the fact that he isn’t completely against the idea is something to look forward to. Not to mention, if he doesn’t resurge as Captain America then there are always chances of him coming back to Marvel as Johnny Storm for Fantastic Four instead. “I feel like he didn’t really get his day,” the Knives Out star told Josh Horowitz about Human Torch.
So his not returning as Steve Rogers doesn’t expunge the possibility of his MCU revival altogether.
It’s been nearly four years since Evans bid farewell to the superhero, and yet, he speaks of his experience as Captain America more reverently than ever. “That was such a special time in my life,” The Avengers star said about playing the formidable superhero. “I’m very precious with the character, That’s the problem. I’m so protective of it.”
Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Captain America was, more or less, Chris Evan’s breakthrough role that amassed him global recognition and a goldmine of opportunities. But after playing the role for nearly a decade in ten different MCU projects, The Gray Man star depicted Steve Rogers one last time in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame wherein he ended up going back in time to spend the rest of his life with his one true love, Peggy Carter, after Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the world from Thanos’ wrath. His Marvel exit was further solidified after he bestowed the title upon Mackie’s Falcon.
But it’s good to see that the character still occupies such a significant space in Evans’ life because that might just end up working out in fans’ favor someday.
