Despite stiff competition, John Wick: Chapter 4 is already the highest-earning John Wick movie after passing John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is officially the highest-grossing John Wick movie. The latest installation of Wick’s story comes as he attempts to rid the world of the High Table in a desperate attempt to earn his freedom. With enemies all around him and allies turning to rivals, there are few places to turn and fewer people to trust. For Wick, that means fighting for his life. For the studio, that means a huge box office take.
John Wick: Chapter 4 has officially grossed $349.7 million worldwide, and its run isn’t even close to over. John Wick: Chapter 4‘s box office success comes after hitting major victories both domestically and internationally, which has helped it barrel past John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum‘s impressive $328 million take. This comes in spite of stiff competition from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Renfield opening during its run.
Does This Mean John Wick 5 Will Happen?
The film’s success raises the question of a potential sequel. While John Wick 4 ends fairly definitively with Wick’s death, the high box office numbers could mean that Lionsgate may want to see more from the prolific franchise. Of course, Keanu Reeves would have to agree to return if there is ever going to be a sequel and that remains in question.
Originally, John Wick: Chapter 4 and John Wick: Chapter 5 were going to be filmed together. That plan was eventually scrapped for quality concerns, as it would mean the movies could begin to feel too similar. As time passed, however, hopes for John Wick: Chapter 5 quickly diminished, as word of a renewal never came. Reeves doubts John Wick: Chapter 5 is guaranteed, citing that he needs to see audience responses before determining the direction of the franchise.
Given that John Wick: Chapter 4‘s IMDB score has seen it earn an impressive 8.1 as the 172nd highest-rated movie of all time, those responses have offered a good sign for the John Wick franchise. Its box office success should be enough to propel the studio to green light John Wick: Chapter 5. Even Wick’s John Wick: Chapter 4 death is easy to scrub away, as it does make some sense for him to fake his death. John Wick may have earned his freedom at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, but freedom rarely lasts unless it’s fought for, and Wick is always ready to fight.
