We are at a turning point in society. As renowned American physicist Michio Kaku has stated, the next 100 years of science will determine whether we will perish or thrive. Will we remain a Type 0 civilization, or will we move forward and embark on our journey to the stars? Recent mysterious cosmic signals have sparked discussions about the possibility of extraterrestrial ships being propelled by them.
Experts predict that as a civilization advances and grows, its energy demand will rapidly increase due to population growth and the energy needs of various machines. To measure a civilization’s technological advancement based on the amount of usable energy it has at its disposal, the Kardashov scale was developed in 1964 by Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashov, while searching for signs of extraterrestrial life within cosmic signals. The scale has three classes: Type I, Type II, and Type III, and other astronomers have added Type IV and Type V. However, the human race is not even part of this scale for the time being.
Since our energy needs still depend on dead plants and animals, we are a humble Type 0 civilization, and we have a long way to go before we can be considered a Type I civilization. This shows that we are a primitive civilization in the eyes of other extraterrestrial races. While we have only set foot on the Moon here on Earth, some extraterrestrial civilizations may travel by radio signals, according to scientists at Harvard University. The recent discovery of mysterious cosmic signals has sparked discussions about the possibility of extraterrestrial ships being propelled by them.
Extraterrestrial Origin
Physicists at Harvard University believe that mysterious cosmic phenomena called rapid radio bursts (FRBs) could be evidence of extraterrestrial interstellar spacecraft propulsion technology. FRBs are extremely powerful and generate the equivalent of 500 million suns, depending on the energy that is created. In 2016, astronomers detected 16 mysterious FRBs, all of which came from the same place outside the Milky Way.
Theoretical physicist Avi Loeb explained that, so far, scientists have not been able to discover any natural source of these rapid radio bursts, but suggests that if they are artificial, it is certainly worth investigating much more.
“Rapid radio bursts are very bright due to their short duration and origin at great distances, and we have not been able to identify a possible natural source for sure,” Loeb explained. “If it comes from artificial origin, then it’s worth investigating.”
Although mysterious rapid radio bursts are not uncommon, with scientists believing that 2,000 of them occur on any given day, the biggest challenge they face is trying to investigate why they are so extremely fast, with bursts of a duration of only five milliseconds. However, researchers were lucky in 2016 when they discovered 16 FRBs, all of which were repeated and came from the same place in space.
Then, in early January, researchers again detected six much faster BRFs, which came from the exact same location. After a lot of work, scientists were finally able to figure out that the bursts came from 3 billion light years from Earth and came from a weak dwarf galaxy, according to the science journal Science Alert.
Rapid radio bursts, officially known as FRB 121102 and have been repeating since 2016, have no official explanation. The most popular theory at the moment is that they are caused by “explosive” events that occur in space, such as huge black holes or superluminous supernovae. Although researchers have theories about what is causing these rapid radio bursts, it is important to remember that, at this point, it is all speculation.
Now, Avi Loeb of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has suggested that physicists are open to the possibility that rapid radio bursts come from extraterrestrial civilizations.
“We examined the possibility that rapid radio bursts would come from the activity of extragalactic civilizations,” Loeb continued. “Our analysis shows that bursts used to feed large light sails could produce parameters that are consistent with FRB. The characteristic diameter of the laser beam output is calculated through a combination of energetic and engineering constraints, and both intriguing approaches would yield a result similar to that found on the scale of a large rocky planet.”
It is currently unknown whether these mysterious rapid radio bursts are produced by an alien civilization to propel their spacecraft. Theories and speculations have been proposed, including the possibility that the bursts are caused by the activity of extragalactic civilizations using a photonic propulsion system called “light candles.” This method could be done by using the sun’s rays or a giant laser propulsion system. Avi Loeb and his team of researchers suggest that the bursts may come from an alien civilization using a radio transmitter on their planet to launch their light candles.
However, it is important to remember that science is based on evidence, not belief or speculation, and that more research is needed to determine the true origin of these rapid radio bursts. While the existence of extraterrestrial life is becoming more and more talked about, it is still a matter of time before concrete evidence is found.
