The acclaimed singer and actress has been featured in many films over the years. Here is a look back all of her action movies.
There is absolutely no doubt that Jennifer Lopez is one of the most talented stars in the entertainment industry, boasting a career that has successfully crossed many art fields and has established her as one of the most popular performers in the public eye. Lopez always knew she wanted to work in the artistic world, and at the age of five, she started taking dance lessons. As she grew older, she kept pursuing several disciplines and by 1989 she got her first major opportunity: a job as a dancer on the European tour of the show Golden Musicals of Broadway. Soon after, she made her television debut on In Living Color, after which she decided to pursue a career in acting.
By 1999, after a few years of working in films that brought her great acclaim, Lopez released her first musical album, On the 6, taking the first steps in what would become an overwhelmingly popular music career. Nevertheless, she never stopped acting, and became a leading lady with expertise across all genres, as well as an icon of rom-coms thanks to films such as Maid in Manhattan and Monster-in-Law.
Throughout her career, Lopez has also starred in a few action movies alongside some of the industry’s biggest stars, and after many years, she returned to the genre with 2022’s Shotgun Wedding. Later this year, she is expected to star in an upcoming action movie, The Mother. In this Netflix production, Lopez plays a former assassin forced to break out of hiding to protect her daughter’s life, and will be joined by Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, and Gael Garcia Bernal. Here’s a look at all of Jennifer Lopez’s action movies so far.
4 Money Train
In 1992, Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes co-starred in White Men Can’t Jump, a sports comedy that quickly became a highly acclaimed box-office hit. Three years later, they reunited on the silver screen to star in Money Train, although this second production failed to live up to the duo’s previous film, and became a box-office bomb. This Joseph Ruben film follows John and Charlie Robinson, two foster brothers with very different personalities, who work as cops on the New York City Subway. After losing their jobs in an incident, one of them starts to hatch an ambitious plan: to rob the money train with the entire subway revenue, and although the other one attempts to prevent it, he ends up getting involved in this elaborate scheme.
Jennifer Lopez, Robert Blake, and Chris Cooper join the leads in this action comedy that was not met with good reviews, and has been described, among other things, as rambling and inconsistent. In Money Train, Lopez plays Grace Santiago, a transit officer who eventually becomes John’s love interest.
3 Parker
Parker is a fictional character starring in almost every novel written by Donald Westlake under the pen name of Richard Stark. In 2013, Taylor Hackford adapted one of them, Flashfire, to film, with Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez leading the cast, hence Parker made it to the movies. This film follows the titular character, a successful and highly dangerous thief who, after a mission, is double-crossed by his own team, who leave him on the side of the road for dead. But there’s a problem: Parker managed to survive, and now he’s willing to do whatever it takes to track down every member of his team, take revenge by his own hand and sabotage their next mission.
To do this, he enlists the help of Leslie, a real-estate agent who desperately needs money to improve her personal situation and turns out to be an excellent ally. Joining the leads in this action film are Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce, Clifton Collins, and Bobby Cannavale. Parker was met with mixed reviews upon release, with many critics praising the performances of the actors, but slamming the adaptation of the story.
2 Shotgun Wedding
Shotgun Wedding is, so far, the latest film starring Jennifer Lopez, and it was released in December 2022. This Jason Moore film follows Darcy and Tom, a couple who are about to get married on an exclusive private island in the Philippines. The couple’s life, which is already complicated due to a few doubts regarding the wedding, is turned upside down when a group of pirates interrupts the celebration and take everyone hostage. It’s up to them to confront the criminals and bring everyone to safety, even though this will expose the fears they have about one another.
Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel star in this Jason Moore film alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Sonia Braga, Cheech Marin, D’Arcy Carden, and Lenny Kravitz. Originally, Shotgun Wedding was to star Lopez with Ryan Reynolds, who ended up serving as executive producer, and subsequently Armie Hammer, who exited the project in the early stages following the abuse allegations against him.
1 Out of Sight
The 1998 film Out of Sight marked the first of many collaborations between director Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney. This production, inspired by Elmore Leonard’s 1996 novel, was produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher, and also featured performances by Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheerleader, Dennis Farina, and Steve Zahn. Out of Sight follows Jack Foley, an expert bank robber who is arrested and imprisoned after a robbery goes wrong. While fleeing the facility, Jack crosses paths with Karen, a federal agent who, from then on, sets out on a mission to recapture him. But this officer has a serious problem: she also has feelings for the fugitive.
Out of Sight was released in June 1998 and quickly became a box-office hit with rave reviews that won many accolades. Among them, it received two Academy Award nominations in the Best Screenplay and Best Film Editing categories.
