Actress Angelina Jolie initially did not intend to adopt children in Vietnam after having Maddox, but she changed her mind because of a photo of a Vietnamese soldier.
In an interview with Vogue magazine about her work helping refugees around the world as a special envoy of the United Nations, Angelina Jolie also shared about the adoption journey. The Hollywood actress adopted Maddox first when she went to Cambodia to film Secret of the Ancient Tomb , then to Zahara in Ethiopia and Pax Thien in Vietnam.

Jolie said of her destiny to become Maddox’s mother: “Cambodia is a country that made me aware of refugees, connected me to issues abroad in a way I never had, and brought me here. with my work at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Above all, it made me a mother.In 2001, while attending a program at a school in Samlout, I sat on the floor playing puzzles. With a little boy, and obviously I was thinking, ‘My son is here.’ A few months later, I met little Mad at an orphanage. I couldn’t explain the coincidence, though. I’m not a superstitious person, that’s the obvious fact.”
When a Vogue reporter asked Angelina Jolie if the adoption of Pax Thien and Maddox from neighboring countries was a deliberate decision, she replied: “Yes, I thought about that. I didn’t think at first. I’m going to adopt a child in Vietnam because I already have Mad who is Cambodian and two countries with complicated histories. Then, while reading a book on human rights, I couldn’t take my eyes off the image of a person. Vietnamese soldiers held captive by the Americans I thought about our country and America’s intervention in Southeast Asia I thought about a future where we would all be one family I am very lucky to be the mother of Mad and Pax. Every day I feel grateful.”
Maddox and Pax Thien became close brothers.
Taking care of a family with three adopted children, three biological children, Angelina Jolie feels honored and exciting. She shared: “Each child is wonderful in their own way in the family. It’s important to be open about everything and share it with each other. ‘adopt’, ‘orphanage’ are positive words in the family. With our adopted children, I can’t review the pregnancy but I will tell in detail and lovingly about the journey I found my babies and the moment I first looked them in the eye. Star”.
Angelina said her adopted children will never lose their roots while living with their parents in America: “All adopted children carry a beautiful mystery about the world in which they are born. When the children arrive from another race and a foreign land, it’s a gift to you, complete and learning. It’s been a magical journey to share together. In the interview, Angelina Jolie also revealed her decision to break up with Brad Pitt after 10 years of attachment and two years of marriage: “I broke up for family happiness. It was the right decision. I continued to practice. Some people have taken advantage of my silence and kids see lies about themselves in the media, but I always remind them that they know the truth and understand their own thoughts. In fact, they are six very brave and strong children.”
