Sam Davis, 58, from Maryland, USA captured this incredible moment on camera. Davis’s photos show the eel emerging from the large blue heron’s kite.
The eel uses its hard head to pierce the heron’s kite. Despite his best efforts, the eel could not survive.
Davis said he initially thought the two animals were fighting and that the eel might have bitten the heron’s neck.
“But when I got home and edited the picture, I realized the eel was piercing its neck. I could see its eyes. It was still alive at the time,” Davis said.
“I was surprised that the heron was still flying with a rather large ‘hole’ in its neck. But it is unlikely to survive such an injury,” said Martin Fowlie, a wildlife expert.
