A man panning for gold on Alaska’s Kupreanof Island along Coho Creek never imagined he would end up risking his life to save a dying she-wolf and her babies. What happened next marked him forever.
Making his way through the middle of a forest, he froze as he came face to face with a wild creature in a swamp.
Only when he got closer did he realize it was a huge Alaskan timber wolf, wounded and immobile after being caught in a trap.
Understandably, he was petrified with fright, but soon realized that not only was he weak and exhausted from being stranded for so many days without sustenance, but also that it was a female begging for help.
Although he was very cautious to prevent her from attacking him, he saw that her nipples were full of milk. This meant only one thing: she had babies that desperately needed her to survive.
He didn’t mind risking his own life to help the wild mother in distress.
He knew immediately that he had to help her, but he panicked that his good intention would not be well received by the mother. Still, he felt very sorry for her and her cubs. So he backed away, trying to follow the animal’s tracks, and soon found a den.
The wily man imitated the wolves’ howls, never imagining that four cubs would quickly emerge from their hiding place. They were so hungry that they began to suck on the good Samaritan’s fingers. He carefully loaded them into his bag and reunited them with their mom.
The mother hugged her little ones with emotional moans that he will never forget.
However, even though the mother witnessed the man’s good deed, she still did not trust him. But he knew he had to feed her any way he could, otherwise she would die. Without hesitation, he brought her the remains of a freshly killed deer to appease her hunger.
For the next few days, the man camped near the mother wolf and her cubs, still tied up, for fear that she would react aggressively against him. But each day he busied himself looking for food to see if he could gain her trust.
At the wrong time the mother began to wag her tail in gratitude as she prepared his dinner.
The man took a leap of faith and decided to release her. She finally licked his hands and allowed him to free her from the nasty trap that had badly damaged her paw.
As they made their way back to her den, she made an abrupt stop and with a gesture, convinced her rescuer to follow her. The man was stunned when he encountered a whole pack of wolves, they were the mother’s family and she was introducing them to him.
It was an experience as overwhelming as it was mind-blowing, he just didn’t understand how he started interacting with so many wolves who treated him as part of the pack. But he sadly had to say goodbye.
Mom let out a howl that was clearly one of lamentation, and so the now great friends said goodbye, never imagining the experience that would bring them together again.
As it turned out, four years later, the man returned to Coho Creek for another adventure. Nostalgia hit him so hard when he again saw a steel trap by the swamp, it seemed implausible but it was the same one he pulled out of his friend’s paw.
Wrapped in his memories, everything changed when an imposing grizzly bear confronted him face to face. So he didn’t hesitate to climb a tree when he felt cornered. And the only thing he could think of was to let out a wolf howl.
Thinking that his plan would have no effect, and that unfortunately his end would come, out of nowhere he saw how 4 wolves with their sharp teeth approached to frighten the bear, forcing him to leave.
Then, one of the specimens stared at him and the two melted into each other’s gaze. As unbelievable as it seemed, it was her, the mother he rescued 4 years ago, and of course she remembered her rescuer.

Although the man vowed not to return to the place because of how dangerous it could be for his life, his magical experience and dreamlike relationship with these animals marked him forever.
This only reminds us that animals are the purest, most innocent and noble of beings. And the human being should only take a step back to allow them to be owners of this Planet, which also belongs to them.
