Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy could leave the club this summer if a ‘good proposal’ arrives.
That is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who also claims Mendy changed agency last week to Lian Sports, with new agent Fali Ramadani set to take care of his future. After a series of errors at the end of last season and start of this, Mendy has fallen to second choice goalkeeper at Chelsea behind Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Though the Senegalese international has also struggled with injury this term, he has not started a single match in any competition for the Blues since a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United in November. That said, Mendy’s replacement Kepa has hardly set the world alight since reclaiming the number one spot either, with past weaknesses re-emerging such as his ability from long shots.
It is yet to be confirmed what Chelsea will do regarding the goalkeeper situation this summer as they look to put the finishing touches in place on a managerial appointment first. Mauricio Pochettino is widely expected to become Graham Potter’s successor, though an official announcement is still to arrive.
Reports earlier this week indicated that Pochettino is keen to bolster his options between the sticks as he looks to build a stronger spine at Stamford Bridge. The addition of a new goalkeeper would push Mendy down to third choice in West London and surely signal the end of his time at the club.
Despite a disappointing last 12 months, Mendy did play a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph back in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel.
