This was the first time I’d heard of this type of deer! On May 12, 2015, a pudu fawn was born at the Queen’s Zoo in New York. The small newborn weighed less than a pound and stood 6 inches tall when she was born!
The pudu is the world’s tiniest deer and is only found in Argentina and Chile, where it is considered endangered. The zoo’s release of a young deer has gone viral, and I can see why.
A zoo visitor snapped a photo of the young deer about 10 days after it was born and shared it on the zoo’s Facebook page. Isn’t he a cutie?
The tiny creature is still nursing, but she is beginning to consume greens, kale, and carrots. When he grows up, he’ll lose the white spots, which won’t be that noticeable. Pudus adults stand around a foot tall.
