Los padres, Stephanie y AJ, de Ohio, EE. UU., tenían un gran deseo de ser un rebaño completo. Con dos hijos biológicos y un hijo adoptado, Stephanie Hollifield y su esposo AJ querían cumplir su sueño de tener una familia numerosa y buscaron adoptar otro niño, escribe Love What Matters.

La pareja estaba nerviosa por ser padres de cuatro hijos, pero su deseo superaba sus preocupaciones y estaban decididos a convertirse en padres adoptivos y, con suerte, con el tiempo, en padres adoptivos nuevamente.

En el camino, se enteraron de que Stephanie estaba embarazada y el sueño de adoptar se archivó temporalmente.

When she was six months along, they received a phone call asking if they could be foster parents for a little baby girl. Stephanie announced that she was expecting a child, to which the social worker replied that it was not usual to place babies with families with newborns.

Only after this opportunity to become foster parents to a little girl came and went on the same day did the couple realize that they had not given up their desire to become foster parents again, despite the fact that they themselves were expecting children.

After a couple of weeks, however, the phone rang again. The baby girl, who was 7 weeks old at the time, hadn’t found a home yet, could Stephanie and AJ consider taking her in anyway?

“This was madness! Who has babies three months apart? In addition, we would then have FIVE children! It’s TLC reality show at the level of insanity!” Stephanie says.

The next day, a heavily pregnant Stephanie and AJ drove across half of Ohio to pick up the beautiful girl, appropriately nervous about whether they had made the right choice.

In the weeks that followed, she got a lot of strange looks because she walked with a huge pregnant belly and a newborn baby draped across her chest.

Stephanie described the time after her son was born, with a newborn and an infant, as if a dream she didn’t know she’d had had come true. “I remember how magical it was the first time they laughed together. I remember how much pure joy they gave us.”

En medio del caos y la alegría, los padres recibieron una llamada telefónica de la trabajadora social diciendo que uno de los familiares de la niña estaba solicitando la custodia de la niña.

A pesar de que la evaluación de la trabajadora social fue que la niña tendría una mejor crianza con Stephanie y AJ, con sus hermanos allí, la familiar tenía la ley de su lado. Se trataba de un familiar anciano, soltero, con escaso apoyo social y con una situación económica difícil.

El día antes de la fecha prevista para el juicio, por suerte llegó otra llamada telefónica de la trabajadora social, que iba a volver a poner su vida patas arriba; el pariente había cambiado de opinión. Los padres se apresuraron y solicitaron adoptar a la niña lo antes posible. Cuando tenía 10 meses, la niña se convirtió en miembro legal de la familia de siete.

Aunque Stephanie admite que es un trabajo duro y tiempos difíciles, nunca se han arrepentido de la decisión de crecer hasta los cinco años.
