Fans are used to seeing LeBron James sport 23 and 6 on his jerseys over the last 20 years, and recently, the four-time champion revealed why he wears No. 6 on his Los Angeles Lakers jersey.
“Why do I wear No. 6?” James said in a fan tweet while signing his Lakers yellow jersey. “There are lots of reasons. One, 23 is one of my favorite numbers, so two times three is 6. Also, my first son was born on October 6. My youngest son is on June 14, the sixth month of the year. 6 has always been with me.”
“Six has a lot of meaning to me, from my family and numbers and things of that nature to what I believe in and things of that sort, but my mentality doesn’t change.”

James switched from the iconic No. 23 on his jersey to 6 during the 2021 offseason, and it should be noted that the switch wasn’t the first time.

When he played for Miami Heat for four seasons after joining in 2010, he sported 6 and later came back to 23 again when he returned to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He used the same number during his first couple of seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Per The Athletic, when James switched to No. 6 in 2010, “It was not only out of deference to Michael Jordan, whose 23 was retired by the Heat earlier in the decade but also in honor of Julius Erving, a nod to his kids’ birthdays. He also wore 6 in three Olympics.” For now, it looks like No. 6 will be what it is for the remainder of his illustrious career.
