The 30-year-old is expected to return to Burnley when his temporary spell at Old Trafford ends, leaving Erik ten Hag short of attacking options.
Anthony Martial is also set to depart, so United officials are prioritising signing a striker.
And according to The Times, Harry Kane is at the top of the transfer wishlist.
Ten Hag is also considering a swoop for Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund, who is expected to cost around £40million.
The 20-year-old, who joined the club in a £15m move from Sturm Graz last summer, has scored seven goals in 29 Serie A appearances for the Black and Blues this season.
He has also impressed at an international level, scoring five goals in four games for Denmark.
Meanwhile, top target Kane is still pondering his future at Tottenham.
The striker is about to enter the final year of his contract with the Lilywhites and he is yet to agree terms for a new deal.
So Daniel Levy could decide to cash-in on him this summer to prevent him from leaving for free at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
Levy reportedly wants £100m for Kane, but the Red Devils are hoping to secure his services for slightly less.
