We have heard of the predator turning into the prey but certainly not in this manner. A startling image of two ᴅᴇᴀᴅ snakes entangled – one brown and one black – came out of Griffith in southern New South Wales.
A ᴄʟᴏsᴇr look reveals that the situation is less than clear-cut and that there are still unsolved questions. Has the black snake been ingested by the brown snake? Has the black snake now managed to escape by biting? Even so, is that possible?
Geoff Mitchell, a bystander who saw the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ snakes along the roadside and took the enigmatic shot, was unsure of exactly what happened. He told radio station 3AW that he saw a tangle of snakes and got up to take a look, grabbed his camera and shot a picture. He added that he had to do some research on it as he thought about it a lot.
Although it appeared to be rather usual for brown snakes to consume black snakes, he had never witnessed any cases of one snake tearing a hole through another.
The picture was sent to Queensland’s Aᴜsᴛʀᴀʟɪᴀ Zoo, which was equally perplexed, according to 3AW. The zoo said that they hadn’t seen anything like that before, so it was definitely rare. They couldn’t imagine a black snake getting into another snake. They would still suggest that the brown snake had been eating the black one but they would never know for sure.
