Liverpool great Daniel Agger is covered in tattoos and plenty of them hold a unique story
It was 15 years ago today that Liverpool signed a young Danish defender by the name of Daniel Agger.
He’d go on to establish himself as a huge Liverpool fan favourite, spending eight and a half years with the club.
It was clear that Agger was always a huge fan of tattoos, which were often visible during games.
But after retiring from football in 2016 at the age of 31, the former defender took his artistic passion to new heights.
Already a qualified tattoo artist at this point, Agger went on to found global brand Tattoodo.
Agger was first tattooed aged just 15 on a school trip to Paris
This set off a lifelong love affair and passion with body art.
In 2014 after returning to Brondby, the centre-half was pictured giving a fan of the club a tattoo and more recently shared a picture tattooing a Liver Bird to a Liverpool fan’s foot.
Not only has he been giving tattoos but he’s also been adding to his own extensive and creative collection.
Here we take a look at some of Agger’s most meaningful tattoos.
1. YNWA

We had to start with this one.
It is arguably Agger’s most famous tattoo of all.
When the Denmark-native was heavily linked with a multimillion pound departure in the summer of 2012, he knew in his heart Liverpool was his home and ended all rumours when he inked the letters YNWA (You’ll Never Walk Alone) to his knuckles.
2. Liver Birds
Agger added to his iconic YNWA tattoo four years later when he added two Liver Birds to the same hand to represent his love of the club as well as the city.
3. Mom and Dad

The 35-year-old has tribute tattoos to both his mother and father.
The words ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ feature inside hearts on his right and left calves. Both heart are surrounded by flowers with an ornate dagger.
4. Pain is temporary
Forced into early retirement due to injury woes and unmanageable pain, this tattoo was a reminder during his playing days that pain is temporary.
‘Pain is temporary’ is inscribed on his right ankle with ‘Victory is forever’ featured on the opposing Achilles tendons.
5. Necklace

One of Agger’s most prominent tattoos for many years was the large necklace on his chest.
Now surrounded by newer ink, the pendant is still visible and pays tribute to his two sons. The names and years of birth both feature inside the pendant as it reads ‘Jamie ’09 Mason ’12’.
6. I <3 U
Agger married partner Sofie in 2010.
On his left knuckles he has an eye symbol followed by a love heart symbol and the letter ‘U’.
On his wedding ring finger he has lightning bolts.
7. Denmark Double
Agger made 75 appearances for Danish national team and it is no surprise that he is adorned in the country’s red and white flag.
The Denmark flag features on his left shoulder as well as his right forearm.
8. Vikings

We know from his Danish flags that Agger is very patriotic. He also has several nods to his country’s Viking history.
There are several Vikings which feature on his body. The folk legend Holger Danske features prominently on Agger’s back. He is sat among the graves of famous Danish kings.
A trio of Vikings appear below the folk legend, they represent the famous proverb: “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.”
Agger also has a large image of a Viking with wings at the top of his right arm.
9. 1984
Also on his back is the faded year 1984. On top of this the words ‘Mors Certa, Hora Incerta’ feature.
The ancient Latin proverb translates: “Death is certain, it’s hour is not.”
There are also two Chinese symbols – their meaning is unknown.
10. Skull

Agger has filled out his tattoos over the years and pictures from last summer’s Liverpool Legend’s meeting with Borussia Dortmund show more recent ink which has been added to his body including the skull which sits on the bottom right of his stomach.
On the other side sits a portrait of a woman.
11. Brondby

Both legs are covered in intricate stars and dots.
