Cozy Brick Barn Home Clad With Shingles

This unique barn home is built on the place of an old 1970s barn in Suffolk, England

Blee Halligan architects has transformed a nineteenth-century brick barn on a rural location on the very edge of the Suffolk coast in the east of England. A new building wrapped in cedar shingles and topped with a sculptural roof, whose undulating form gives a dynamic shape to the duplex interiors of each room.

Located near the seaside town of Aldeburgh, the barn enjoys a rural landscape comprising five acres of gardens and woodland. Centered around the updated nineteenth century barn, the extension encloses five bedrooms, each packed with generous, light-filled living, dressing, and bathing spaces. All rooms have access into the garden, as well as an individual decking area on which to enjoy the green-filled surroundings. The upgraded fifth bedroom is more generous in scale, with a six-meter high living space and carefully selected, private views toward the beautiful landscaped gardens and the Suffolk countryside beyond.

The interiors are done in a mix of contemporary and mid-century modern style, large windows and skylights that are present in some of the rooms flood the spaces with light. Wooden beams and white brick walls add texture to the spaces. Some bedrooms are lofted and placed right under the skylights, and others are more regular. The spaces are fit with built-in storage units that hide all the clutter away, and the hallway features a whole wall taken by a large plywood storage unit for all the necessary things. The dining zone is placed by two large windows to enjoy the views while eating.
