Sevilla are reportedly moving away from signing Tottenham youngster and former player Bryan Gil this winter, with the club now favouring a move for Ajax’s Lucas Ocampos.
Gil, who is ‘desperate to return home,’ has been looking for a way out of the London club after failing to regularly break into Antonio Conte’s team this season.
However, it seems that talks of a move to Sevilla being in its final stages have been vastly overstated.
Although, other clubs are vying to sign the 21-year-old, so a January departure for Gil is still on the cards.
That is according to Estadio Deportivo, who claim that the recent reports of Gil’s move to Sevilla are incorrect.
They explain that Sevilla boss Jorge Sampoali has made Ocampos his number one target as he looks to add ‘strength in the penalty area.’
The Spanish club currently find themselves in the relegation zone, so understandably the Argentine coach is keen to add a more experienced attacking option in the 28-year-old.
Sevilla director of football Monchi has reportedly been working hard to bring the Ajax player to southern Spain, moving away from their initial target, Gil.
Since arriving from Sevilla on a £25m deal in 2021, Gil has made only 26 appearances for Spurs, failing to score any goals and contributing one assist.
The youngster was touted to have huge potential when he arrived in the Premier League, but so far that has failed to come to fruition.
In January 2022, Gil went on a six-month loan to Valencia, where he was afforded more playing time, making 17 appearances in total. However, he still only contributed one assist and failed to find the net.
This season, Gil has played just 42 minutes for Conte’s side, seemingly well behind the likes of Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and Lucas Moura in the pecking order.
Gil doesn’t have the physicality for the Premier League
The Italian boss has previously praised the youngster, but also voiced his reservations, suggesting Gil is lacking in physical strength.
Speaking in a press conference in October, the Italian manager said: “For Gil, it was really important to go out last season and play more games in Spain because we’re talking about a league that you don’t have to be so strong to play in this league.
“There’s more technical quality, and for him, it was really positive to go there and play games
“But I’m sure about Gil’s future because we’re talking about a player who sees football.
“When I ask him something in the training session, he understands quickly, and his desire is to become an important player.
“If I have to compare him with someone, I can see him like Bernardo Silva in his structure.
“But, for me, at this moment, Silva is physically stronger than him, but we are talking about this type of player.”
Despite the praise, Gil is ‘crazy about returning to Spain’ and although a move back to Sevilla is now looking unlikely, has plenty of other potential suitors.
Reportedly, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Cadiz and Mallorca have all shown an interest in the winger, who will be well aware of how desperate Gil is to leave Spurs.
It is thought that Tottenham would accept a bid in the region of £25m, as they look to recoup what they spent on the Spaniard.
