Last week it was reported that Liverpool were in ‘pole position’ to sign Chelsea target Enzo Fernandez.
As reported by Rudy Galetti, Jurgen Klopp’s side were favourites to sign the Argentina international, who won a World Cup in December.
However, on 90min it was claimed that Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Fernandez.
That was bad news but now Fabrizio Romano has more of it for Liverpool fans.
According to the Italian journalist, the Blues’ pursuit of the Benfica midfielder is ‘really advanced’ and it does, at this stage, look like he’s heading to Stamford Bridge.
Romano told Caught Offside: “At the moment there are negotiations ongoing for Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea will push this week to get it done, it’s really advanced, but it’s not completed yet.”
If Romano is right in saying that the West Londoners will make a ‘push’ this week, you have to imagine Liverpool’s race is run.
And that’s disappointing for the Reds because although their January has got off to a cracking start, by signing Cody Gakpo, they desperately need midfielders.
Who knows, perhaps Liverpool weren’t even keen on Fernandez in the first place because, remember, Jude Bellingham remains on the table.
But if Jurgen Klopp and co did like the South American, which they did by all accounts, then it looks like they’re set for transfer heartbreak.
