Son Heung-min dismisses Arsenal title hopes with blunt three-word verdict

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min had no desire to discuss Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated north London derby clash

Arsenal player ratings vs Tottenham: Son strikes in 1-0 defeat

Son Heung-min has insisted that Tottenham are not interested in Arsenal’s title challenge ahead of Sunday’s north London derby.

The Gunners are currently five points clear at the summit of the Premier League and appear to be the team with the best chance of dethroning Manchester City, who are bidding to capture their fifth domestic crown in six years.

Arsenal have only lost once all season but will travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after dropping precious points against Newcastle in the title race last week. And although Son claims nobody at Spurs is paying attention to the Gunners’ title tilt, he does admit that they are desperate to gain revenge for the defeat they suffered in the first north London derby of the season, which the Gunners won 3-1 back at the start of October.

When he was asked for his thoughts on Arsenal’s recent form and their league position following Tottenham’s win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup on Saturday, Son retorted: “I’m not interested.”

He added: “We lost against them in the away game, so we have a lot of homework [this week] to make it good again.

“I think the fans were really disappointed when we lost at the Emirates, so I think we have a massive task at home. Everybody must be ready to throw their bodies in and we’re good to go.”

While Tottenham have struggled in the league of late, Arsenal are flying ahead of Sunday’s seismic showdown. But before the Gunners can turn their attention to the highly-anticipated clash with their bitter rivals, Mikel Arteta’s side have a tricky FA Cup third-round tie to negotiate on Monday night as they travel to Oxford.

No team has tasted FA Cup glory more times than Arsenal, who have won the famous competition no less than 14 times. And Arteta stressed that he will not be sacrificing the cup in order to focus on the league.

Ahead of the tip to the Kassam Stadium, the Spaniard said: “It is obviously a competition that is attached to the successful history of this club, so on Monday, we’ll have a good start and a good test. We have to take the competition and the opponent very seriously and play well, to a high level to win the match.

“It is a competition that we are really looking forward to playing in and brings back huge memories to our football club and the team because not many years ago we won it, but also last year how we went out of the competition. It’s a competition that we really want to play in and compete.”
