Baby Emmitt ᴅɪᴇᴅat just 11 days old after contracting ʜᴇʀᴘᴇs sɪᴍᴘʟᴇx ᴠɪʀᴜs. ʜᴇʀᴘᴇs sɪᴍᴘʟᴇx ᴠɪʀᴜs can be easily sᴘʀᴇᴀᴅ from ᴍᴏᴜᴛʜ to ᴍᴏᴜᴛʜ even if the ᴀᴅᴜʟᴛ isn’t aware they’re ᴄᴀʀʀʏɪɴɢ the cold sᴏʀᴇ ᴠɪʀᴜs. Some ᴇxᴘᴇʀᴛs advise not to ᴋɪss babies on the ʟɪᴘs and to ᴡᴀsʜ your ʜᴀɴᴅs before ᴛᴏᴜᴄʜɪɴɢ them, especially if you’ve been in contact with an animal to prevent the sᴘʀᴇᴀᴅ of ʜᴀʀᴍFᴜʟ ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ.
There are many other ᴠɪʀᴜsᴇs and ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ too, most of them ᴘᴏᴛᴇɴᴛɪᴀʟʟʏ ʜᴀʀᴍFᴜʟ. There’s ᴅᴇʙᴀᴛᴇ about whether a parent can sᴀFᴇʟʏ ᴋɪss their baby. It’s all right most of the time for most babies, but it’s ᴡɪsᴇʀ ɴᴏᴛ to ᴋɪss a ɴᴇᴡʙᴏʀɴ on the lips, or let anyone else do so. ᴡᴀsʜ your ʜᴀɴᴅs before ᴛᴏᴜᴄʜɪɴɢ a baby, especially if you’ve been in contact with an animal. Of course, you’ll need to keep away from a newborn if you’ve got a cold or other sʏᴍᴘᴛᴏᴍs. Dakota Elizabeth Goss ʙʀᴀᴠᴇʟʏ shared her story on TikTok earlier this week in a video that’s been seen by over 1.4 million people. The ᴍᴇɴᴛᴀʟ ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜ ᴀᴅᴠᴏᴄᴀᴛᴇ welcomed her son Emmitt on 26 February 2019. In the emotional clip, which shows a collection of photos of Dakota and her son, the mum wrote: “Babies have ɴᴏ ɪᴍᴍᴜɴᴇ sʏsᴛᴇᴍ and they can’t Fɪɢʜᴛ ʏᴏᴜʀ ɢᴇʀᴍs.”
Emmitt at six days old, the little tot was taken to ʜᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ where it was found he had ʜᴇʀᴘᴇs sɪᴍᴘʟᴇx ᴠɪʀᴜs. Dakota, a professional photographer and podcast host, captioned the video: “No matter how ʜᴀʀᴅ I ᴛʀɪᴇᴅ, I ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅɴ’ᴛ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴇᴄᴛ him. But please ᴡᴀsʜ your ʜᴀɴᴅs, don’t ᴛᴏᴜᴄʜ their ᴍᴏᴜᴛʜs, or ᴋɪss them. They can’t Fɪɢʜᴛ it.” Responding to people in the comments, mom added: “Emmitt ᴡᴀsɴ’ᴛ ᴋɪssᴇᴅ and he still got sɪᴄᴋ. He was just ᴛᴏᴜᴄʜᴇᴅ. It ʜᴀᴘᴘᴇɴs. It’s real. My heart goes out to you,” one person replied. “Thank you for sᴘʀᴇᴀᴅing ᴀᴡᴀʀᴇɴᴇss.” Another wrote. “Everyone is going to want to see my newborn when he’s born but how do I keep him sᴀFᴇ? I’m sᴏ sᴏʀʀʏ for your ʟᴏss.” Mom Dakota didn’t make clear how Emmitt contracted the ɪɴFᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ, but believes it was while he was in ʜᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ. However, she did ᴍᴏᴠᴇ to respond to people who implied it could have been from the family dog seen in the video. “It’s not from the ᴅᴀᴍɴ ᴅᴏɢ,” she wrote. “Did people not see that the dog never came into ᴄᴏɴᴛᴀᴄᴛ?”
In 2020, Dakota and her partner welcomed their second son Everritt, but the mum revealed both parents didn’t feel comfortable ᴋɪssing ʜɪᴍ until he was four months old. They now appear to be expecting twins, with Dakota posting on Facebook this week about ᴅᴇᴀʟɪɴɢ with sɪᴄᴋness. People don’t often talk about the ʙᴀᴅ parts of ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ,” She said: “The past two weeks plus has been the ᴀʙsᴏʟᴜᴛᴇ ʜᴀʀᴅᴇsᴛ for me. Barley keeping anything down, no ᴇɴᴇʀɢʏ, barley can ᴍᴏᴠᴇ, ʟɪɢʜ the aded ness can’t stand to smell anything, busting headaches… I can’t even ride in a car with out getting ᴇxᴛʀᴇᴍᴇʟʏ sɪᴄᴋ. I am at 0. I don’t think I have ever felt this ʙᴀᴅ in my entire life. But, growing babies is the ʜᴀʀᴅᴇsᴛ yet most ʀᴇᴡᴀʀᴅɪɴɢ thing you could ever do.” She added that expectant mums don’t seem to talk about the ɪssᴜᴇs ᴅᴜʀɪɴɢ ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ out of Fᴇᴀʀ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ will say: “Shouldn’t have gotten ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ if you can’t handle the sɪᴄᴋness.”
