At that moment, a dopey lion narrowly escaped being crushed to ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ by a massive elephant as he was drinking from a water hole.
The thirsty lion in Bᴏᴛsᴡᴀɴᴀ was too preoccupied quenching his thirst at the waterhole to notice an elephant walking up behind him. With one foot lifted only inches above the lion’s head, the elephant was only inches away from trampling the animal. Just before being crushed, the lion raised its head and bolted.
Johan Bernard, a Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀn photographer, has spent some time observing the waterhole and he was lucky enough to capture the sᴄᴇɴᴇ in Nxai Pans in Bᴏᴛsᴡᴀɴᴀ on camera.
According to Bernard, it was getting dark quickly and it was late in the day. The male lion was the sole animal present at the waterhole at that time. He started drinking for a long time without looking up.
He added that he could see the elephant bull in the distance, who was also headed straight for the waterhole. Surprisingly unperturbed at all, the lion continued to drink without noticing or hearing the elephant. Luckily, the lion lifted his head just in time and noticed the elephant when he was about two to three meters away, and he fled.
