Terrible circumstances completely ruined these anime characters and changed them forever.
In many instances, tragedy precedes great strength. Heroes and villains use it to motivate their goals and push them past their previous limits. By making the best of a bad situation, they ensure that their lives cannot be defined by a single poor moment.
However, not everyone gets over hardship so gracefully. Some characters suffered through trauma that completely unraveled them, and they never actually recovered from it. These individuals are particularly tragic since they were never able to move past how their lives were irrevocably destroyed. It jaded their perspective on life and influenced their interactions with others.
10/10 Obito Watched His Best Friend Kill His Crush
Naruto
Naruto‘s Obito suffered through greater tragedy than almost anyone in the series. After being crushed by a boulder, he got treatment from the most malevolent villain of the entire series, Madara Uchiha. When returning to the surface, Obito accidentally stumbled upon Kakashi killing Rin firsthand.
This deeply traumatized him and convinced him that reality itself could not be saved. Therefore, he aspired to create the infinite tsukuyomi in order to grant everyone an artificial paradise “far superior” to the world they actually lived in.
9/10 Jonathan Joestar Never Got To Enjoy His Life
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Jonathan Joestar was the first protagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. While his indomitable spirit may have allowed him to recover from brutal hardships, he was stricken with such a consistent string of atrocities that he was never able to recover.
His girlfriend was assaulted, his father was murdered, his home got burned to the ground, and his mentor died to save his life. Just when it seemed as though DIO had been permanently dealt with, he ambushed and killed Jonathan on a honeymoon cruiser to ensure that he’d never live happily ever after.
8/10 Sho Fell In With The Wrong Crowd After His Mother’s Death
Fire Force
Sho was one of the main antagonists of Fire Force and Shinra Kusakabe’s brother. He suffered equally from the conversion and death of their mother though fell in with the wrong crowd afterward.
Under the White-Clad’s supervision, Sho was used both as a weapon and tool to bring forth the Evangelist’s return. Although Shinra successfully appealed to his humanity, Sho was forced to remain in the White-Clad’s ranks due to Haumea’s Ignition Ability. If he would not serve the cult willingly, she would make him obey with force.
7/10 Shigaraki Lost His Faith In Heroes
My Hero Academia
Shigaraki was arguably the greatest victim of My Hero Academia’s society. After losing control and disintegrating his entire family, he wandered the streets hungry and alone. The boy’s feral appearance alarmed strangers, and no hero came to help him.
When All For One arrived to treat Shigaraki, he told him that heroes were responsible for his situation. Shigaraki’s upbringing warped his mind so dramatically that he sought nothing more than to destroy the entire world. He didn’t care if his own body fell apart in the process.
6/10 Uryu Suffered Greatly As A Quincy
Bleach
Uryu’s allegiance have been more complicated than most Bleach characters. Although raised a Quincy, he did not abandon Ichigo and the shinigami in their hour of need. This was at the expense of his father, who warned him against aligning with the Soul Society and what repercussions might come with it.
Uryu’s loyalty was tried when fighting against Szayel Aporro Granz. After having multiple organs crushed, he was forced to rely on Mayuri to save him even though the villain had killed many of his predecessors. Uryu remains resentful and the least enthusiastic of Ichigo’s allies.
5/10 Spike Lost The Will To Live After Julia’s Death
Cowboy Bebop
When Cowboy Bebop‘s Spike Spiegel left the Syndicate and became a bounty hunter, he held onto hope that he’d reunite with Julia one day. Such ambitions were shattered after her death, leaving him despondent and hollow.
Rather than move on from the tragedy, Spike attacked Vicious’ compound in a revenge mission he knew he had no chance of surviving. Faye warned him of such unfavorable odds, though Spike didn’t care since he’d lost the will to live.
4/10 Eren’s Hatred Only Grew After His Mother’s Death
Attack On Titan
The death of Carla Yeager was Attack On Titan‘s catalyst. It filled Eren with hatred for titans and later the outside world responsible for Paradis’ invasion.
Unlike Mikasa or Armin, who suffered similarly under the Marleyans, hatred dominated Eren’s heart much more profoundly. When given access to the Rumbling, he intended not only to eradicate the Marleyans, but the entire world. Ironically, Eren ruined his own life since he commanded the Smiling Titan to attack his home when accessing the Paths and using the Founder’s power.
3/10 Tatsumi’s Fate Was Sealed Ever Since Arriving At The Capital
Akame Ga Kill!
Tatsumi arrived to Akame Ga Kill’s! Capital in hopes of meeting his friends and making money for his village. When he discovered that they were brutally tortured by a rich family and that he was their next victim, everything changed for the worst.
Granted, Tatsumi may have been saved by Leone and Night Raid, but his remaining choices were not ideal. He was forced to join the rebels under threat of death, a decision that poetically resulted in his demise at the end of the anime.
2/10 Gecko Moria Never Recovered When His Crew Was Wiped Out
One Piece
Gecko Moria was once a feared contender in One Piece‘s New World. His crew dominated the high seas until clashing with Kaido and the Beast Pirates. He was defeated so badly that almost none survived the return to Paradise.
Ever since, Moria let himself go and has wasted years waiting for victims to build his armies in the Florian Triangle. Kaido obliterated him so utterly that he became terrified of continuing piracy even though his heart still yearned for it.
1/10 Weather Forecast Lost Everything Against Pucci
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Weather Forecast was once a young man who found love. However, his partner was brutally murdered by a mob of racists partially due to Pucci’s conniving. Broken and angry, Forecast confronted Pucci though had his memories stripped away.
Imprisoned for decades, Forecast spent a large part of his life without knowing who he actually was. When his memory was finally restored, he immediately sought vengeance against Pucci though was killed by him in battle. Nonetheless, Forecast ultimately got closure when Emporio used his Stand disc to kill Pucci in a new reality.
