Furious Liverpool fans have brutally slammed Joe Gomez after his disappointing performance in Brighton’s sensational win at the Amex.
Jurgen Klopp’s woes continued at Liverpool after Solly March fired Brighton into a comfortable 2-0 lead with his brace only 10 minutes into the second half.
Gomez has made 21 appearances for Liverpool this season and came off the bench in the second half to replace Reds defender Joel Matip.
However, the 25-year-old Liverpool centre-back made little impact on the Reds’ backline and was humiliated by Danny Welbeck for Brighton’s third of the match.
March headed the ball into the box and an onrushing Welbeck latched on to it, only to pull off an audacious flick to send the ball flying over Gomez’s head.
Welbeck then fired a superb finish past a helpless Alisson at the near post, with Liverpool outclassed in a stunning win for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.
Gomez was ruthlessly criticised for his display on the pitch, with one fan claiming that Welbeck “ended” his career with his sensational flick.
“Joe Gomez is not even Championship material,” one fan said.
And a second brutally added: “Joe Gomez doing what he does best. A Statue of Liberty impression while defending in the box.”
While a third posted: “The Joe Gomez substitute appearance is one of the worst I have ever seen.”
“Joe Gomez is the worst defender in the league,” another Twitter user wrote.
A fifth fan commented: “Joe Gomez is a finished player.”
Someone else tweeted: “Can’t even take anything away from Welbeck with that — that was pure class. But how the hell is Gomez getting done like that?”
Brighton’s 3-0 win ensured that the Seagulls climbed above Liverpool to seventh place in the Premier League table.
Klopp’s Liverpool are left in eighth place after 18 Premier League matches, with the Reds now seven points adrift from the top four.
Speaking after the defeat, the Liverpool boss admitted that Brighton’s victory was “well deserved” and was dismayed by his side’s performance.
“Bad. Really bad. I can’t remember a worse game. It’s not difficult maybe. Brighton were the better team, it was well deserved. They played really well,” Klopp told BBC Match of the Day.
“It was a very organised team against a not very organised team. We gave the ball away, the spaces were too big and we couldn’t push up. That is obviously not good, especially against a super well-drilled side like Brighton.
“They got more confident and we did the opposite. I can imagine they are very happy because it was a great performance and we made it too easy in too many moments.”
