Wrestling fans have been clamoring for years for The Rock to come out of retirement for one more match, and he continues to not shut the door on the possibility.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Dwayne Johnson was asked about the possibility of having a match with Roman Reigns (the two consider themselves cousins, but are not technically related by blood). To boil down the answer to one word: Maybe.
“I don’t know if I have another title run, but possibly there might be another match down the road,” Johnson said. “It would have to make sense.”
Johnson, 49, had strong words of praise for the 36-year-old Reigns, who has been WWE’s Universal champion for more than 400 days, and said that they discuss this topic of a match “all the time”.
“I’m very close with Roman, obviously,” he said. “We talk about this all the time. I always continue to encourage him to keep doing your thing, keep sharpening those skills. I think he’s doing a great job with his promo, his execution, his in-ring work. It all continues to improve and grow.”
There are several reasons Johnson says a variation of “we’ll see” once every few months when asked about a WWE return. Obviously, Johnson got his start as a celebrity in WWE, and he will always hold a fondness for the organization and its chairman Vince McMahon. Another potential connection is that Johnson works with Nahnatchka Khan, sister of WWE president Nick Khan, on the NBC series “Young Rock”.
There is also the factor that working with Reigns — as well as The Usos, Samoan brothers Jimmy and Jey who are aligned with Reigns and Paul Heyman in a stable called The Bloodline — would be phenomenally interesting from a creative perspective.

However, Johnson is among the biggest movie stars in the world, so not only would the paycheck need to be enormous, but the injury risk if he were ever to be sidelined from filming has to be a consideration for him. Johnson tore his abdominal and abductor muscles during his WrestleMania 29 match against John Cena in 2013.
There is some tricky timing at play for WWE. WrestleMania is in Dallas in 2022 and Los Angeles in 2023. Johnson, in an interview with Andrew Freund, said “there is no truth” right now to he and Reigns squaring off in Dallas.
A blockbuster match of the magnitude of Rock vs. Reigns makes must more sense for the latter, but it’s already remarkable that WWE has kept Reigns this hot for this long. Could they keep the angle simmering for another year and a half if need be?
