Manchester United have already been busy in the January transfer window, but Erik ten Hag’s Champions League chasers are also looking at ways they can strengthen in the summer
After making two loan signings, Manchester United are running out of time to make further additions to their squad in January.
Jack Butland became the Red Devils’ first mid-season recruit when he arrived from Crystal Palace, essentially as a replacement for Martin Dubravka, while Wout Weghorst followed the England international to Old Trafford. There could yet be further ins and outs, but some already have eyes on the summer.
United look set to strengthen up front, and manager Erik ten Hag will hope they can do so with Champions League football on the horizon. Here are the latest transfer lines ahead of what could well be a busy few months ahead.
Reus talks opened
A number of outlets are reporting that Manchester United have opened talks with Marco Reus over a potential summer move. The Borussia Dortmund star is out of contract in the summer, and would be available on a free transfer.
Reus, who spent time in Dortmund’s academy, rejoined the club in 2012 and has scored more than 150 senior goals for Die Schwarzgelben. He also played for Germany at the 2018 World Cup, but missed the 2014 and 2022 editions through injury.
The 33-year-old’s injury issues have limited him to nine Bundesliga appearances this season. He also featured twice in the Champions League group stage, registering one goal and one assist.
United could steal a march over Olmo
Dani Olmo could leave RB Leipzig in the summer
Erik ten Hag’s side have a chance of beating Barcelona to the punch in the race for Dani Olmo. The Spanish international midfielder, who plays for RB Leipzig, has been linked with a summer move away from the Bundesliga high-flyers.
According to CaughtOffside, the 24-year-old is expected to have two release clauses inserted into his contract, with different values depending on whether Barcelona and Real Madrid – or a team from outside Spain – wants to try their luck.
United are said to be in with a shot of luring Olmo to Manchester, with questions remaining over Barca’s finances. However, a January switch is said to be all but a non-starter.
Dumfries price set
Man Utd aren’t the only Premier League side to be linked with Denzel Dumfries
Manchester United would need to part with between €40-50m (£35-44m) to land Denzel Dumfries, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport. The Dutch international has long been linked with a Premier League switch, with United’s plans for the right-back position unclear after mixed displays from Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The report points out that the defender has “never hidden” his desire to play in England. However, United could face competition from Chelsea and Newcastle for the 26-year-old.
Dumfries moved to Italy after impressing for PSV Eindhoven as they twice finished as runners-up to Erik ten Hag’s Ajax in the Eredivisie. He played for the Netherlands at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, where he scored in a last-16 victory over the United States.
