A report has revealed how much Pedro Porro should have cost Tottenham after Sporting Lisbon held strong and managed to use an inflated transfer market to their advantage.
Following lengthy talks between Sporting and Tottenham, which even involved a complete breakdown in discussions, Porro became Antonio Conte’s latest signing on transfer deadline day.
The right-back has moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on loan with an obligation to buy this summer. That obligation stands at €45million (£40m).
Porro, who will wear the number 23 shirt at Tottenham, has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the north London side. He will rival Emerson Royal for a starting spot on the right flank following Djed Spence’s loan move to Rennes and the termination of Matt Doherty’s deal.
During an interview with club media, Porro said: “I feel great about the move. I really wanted to come here. It’s a unique opportunity for me and I hope everything goes well.
“I can bring a lot of character and personality to this team.
“Above all, my desire and will to win. I’ve also managed to watch quite a few league games this season, I’ve been following our games too, and in this case, I can say that now!
“So, yes, I can provide character, desire, and a great attitude.”

The 23-year-old could make his Spurs debut against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. This would be an interesting way for him to start his Spurs career as he was on City’s books between 2019 and 2022 but never actually made an appearance for the club.
A report from trusted source The Athletic has now provided some insight on the talks for Porro and how Spurs got the move to reach completion. It includes a fascinating line about how much the Spaniard should have cost Conte’s team.
Sporting originally told Spurs that they could sign Porro if a bid worth £26.5m was submitted. However, they soon saw the inflated prices that Premier League clubs were paying for players.
Presumably, they would have looked at Chelsea committing to a potential £89m deal to capture Mykhaylo Mudryk. And once this happened, Sporting knew they could cash in.
They resultantly went back to Spurs and said Porro would only leave Portugal if a £40m offer came in. Spurs chiefs hoped to negotiate Sporting back down somewhat, but they were unsuccessful.
Sporting dug their heels in as they knew how desperate Conte was to improve the right wing-back position. As such, Spurs had no choice but to meet Sporting’s demands and pay £40m for Porro.
This means Spurs had to pay £13.5m more than they normally would have to land him. On top of this, Spurs have also had to give up some of their rights towards former winger Marcus Edwards.
They have had to reduce their sell-on clause from 50 per cent to 35 per cent for when Sporting sell the exciting attacker.
While Spurs have paid over the odds, the transfer could still end up being very effective. Spurs have had to deal with plenty of poor performances on the right flank for some time now, whether it be from Doherty or Emerson. Spence, meanwhile, has barely been given any opportunities.

But Porro, a player who has excited observers in the Primeira Liga, now has the chance to make the position his own and help Spurs reach the next level.
He will want to prove City wrong for never giving him a chance. And that could start this weekend when Spurs play City at home.
