On a fine summer day in Culper, Virginia, Goldendoodle Harley was enjoying the lake vista behind his home as he usually does. And it was a good day to be a dog as the afternoon was a peaceful scene of blue skies and calm conditions on the water. But the peace would soon be shattered when Harley spotted a soul in trouble.
Roughly two hundred yards from the shore, out in the depths of the lake, Harley spotted a fawn struggling to swim. But this good boy didn’t hesitate. And by the time pawrents Ralph and Patricia Dorn spotted Harley helping out, the six-year-old dog had already made it to the fawn and was encouraging the baby to swim for it.
A Golden Heart
Harley is a Goldendoodle with a golden heart to match his shining coat. He’s treaded the halls of care centers to lift the spirits of the elderly as a certified therapy dog and visited local libraries to enjoy story time with kids. His bestie is cat sibling Zsu Zsu, and Ralph and Patricia’s grandkids are some of Harley’s favorite people, with proud pup papa Ralph telling People, “He’s 100 percent glued to them.”
“We could tell right away, even as a puppy, he had such a good heart,” said Ralph. “He has always been like that with children and animals. He loves them all.”
And that’s why Ralph and Patricia weren’t surprised Harley saved the baby deer’s life.

Hero of a Pup
Ralph shared the amazing moment on Facebook, writing, “Not sure how the fawn got out there but Harley obviously didn’t ask why, he just jumped into action.”
Harley stayed with the fawn all the way to shore, where the mama deer would soon reunite with her little one. But Harley wasn’t ready to let go quite yet.AD
“Harley didn’t want to leave the fawn,” Ralph explained to People. “He just kept interacting with it, licking it, caring for it.”
It wouldn’t be Harley’s last encounter with the baby he saved, though.
Back with Gratitude
Harley most likely felt he’d never see the fawn again, but as Ralph wrote in his Facebook post, “The story continues.”

The following morning, “Harley got restless running from window to window.”
When Ralph opened the door to see what had Harley in such a tizzy, they heard the bleating of a baby deer.
“Harley ran into the tree line and found the fawn,” Ralph sharing, “The little one stopped bleating, tail wagging, they touched noses sniffed each other and Harley came calmly back to the house with me.”
The fawn and its mom just wanted to stop by and thank hero Harley.
Harley’s tale of heroics has touched many on social media, and the Dorns have been touched by all the love from dog folks, with Ralph sharing, “We’re very happy that it has touched so many people and brought joy to so many as well.”
