Mavericks star Luka Doncic is well on his way to a Hall of Fame career. In four seasons in the NBA, Doncic is averaging 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8 assists per game on 50.5% shooting.
It’s been an absolute clinic for the young Slovenian and his status as one of the best players in the game is no longer a question. But just how high does Luka’s ceiling go?
Considering the grand picture of NBA history, and the many stars who have called the league home, some would argue that he has a long way to go before he can be considered with some of the NBA all-time greats.
Still, there is a sense that being the European GOAT of NBA basketball is within reach for the 4x All-Star.
“It’s a possibility, but you have guys like Giannis [Antetokounmpo] and [Nikola] Jokic, guys like [Drazen] Petrovic and [Arvydas] Sabonis. It’s really tough. You’ve got some really, really good players.”
European-born superstars are not a new thing to the NBA. The names Luka mentioned, along with guys like Dirk Nowitzki and Tony Parker, had amazing success in the NBA and many of them have won several championships.
Of course, there are also a lot of current players who are making a case as well. Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee, for example, already has a Championship and a pair of MVP trophies to show for his time in the NBA.
The bar is set pretty high for Doncic, but it’s still not crazy to think he could one day take up the mantle as the greatest European basketball player ever.
Luka Doncic Needs A Championship To Solidify NBA Legacy
As good as Doncic has been on the Mavericks so far, he has yet to capture a title. Last year’s Western Conference Finals was the farthest Doncic has gone and he’s going to do whatever he can to surpass that mark this season.
The path will not be any easier this year, especially with the Suns and Nuggets standing in the way, but Luka’s new partnership with Kyrie Irving gives them a chance to compete at a level they haven’t been before.
But until Doncic finishes the job and brings a title back to Dallas, his standing among the All-Time greats is going to have limited mobility.
