Four Baby Elephant Siblings Frolic And Jump On Each Other While Their Mother Is Away

Baby elephants are the cutest and happiest animals on the planet. In fact, they know how to entertain themselves. Playing in the grass, cuddling with loved ones, chasing with siblings – these are all their favorite games. And when we see them frolicking together, we can’t help but smile at these young elephants.

The four baby elephants in this story do the same thing. The siblings decided to have fun while their mom was drinking water on the nearby shore. But their games are pretty “ʀᴏᴜɢʜ”. They look like playful and energetic children, don’t they?

Ayesha Cantor, who witnessed the scene, said:

“We had been sitting at the dam for over an hour, watching the various family groups coming in to drink and play and then moving off.”

“We had just decided to move off when I just happened to glance back for a last look and quickly called out for my husband to stop again when I saw the two youngsters seemingly deep in conversation – one more pic turned into the elephant bundle.”

The photos were taken on the banks of the Ghwarrie Dam in Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The pictures show that three children wrestled another baby elephant down, and then fell on top of each other. Small baby elephants weigh about 300 kg each. This means that the lower child carries a load three times heavier than himself. He can’t bear such a load. So when she saw the children playing ʀᴏᴜɢʜ, the mother ran to stop them before anyone was ʜᴜʀᴛ.

Play appeared to be an important contributing factor in reuniting the family. When a young male elephant wants to play with another male of similar age, he holds his trunk up and presents it to the other as an invitation. These ᴇɴᴄᴏᴜɴᴛᴇʀs run the ɢᴀᴍᴜᴛ from gentle sʜᴏᴠɪɴɢ to intense ʜᴇᴀᴅʙᴜᴛᴛɪɴɢ and pushing back and forth with trunks entwining and tusks clacking. The fun continues for seconds to minutes for youngsters; for older teens and young adults, it can go on much longer.
