Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom actor Jason Momoa says he doesn’t believe the third film in the DC Universe hero’s film series will be a jovial one.
Update: An earlier version of this story incorrectly implied the comments were about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, in the interview, Momoa answers a question about Aquaman 3. This has been corrected.
According to star Jason Momoa, fans tuning into the third film in the Aquaman franchise should not expect to find a lighthearted story when viewing the DC Universe movie.
The lead actor of the Aquaman films recently spoke to Variety about the upcoming sequel and what fans can expect to see. When asked about the movie’s tone after the sequel being an easy-going one for viewers to follow, Momoa said he “highly doubts” that will be the case. He even went on to suggest the film is “too dramatic,” hinting that moviegoers could be in for an emotional watch whenever it hits theaters.

Before the third film in the franchise, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could also be an emotional one for fans who have followed Momoa as Aquaman since he debuted as the underwater-loving hero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, especially if recent speculation about his DCU future proves true. Momoa has been heavily tipped to swap his trident for a Harley-Davidson as reports have linked him to a potential Lobo franchise, with the Hawaiian actor starring as “The Last Czarnian.” However, it’s unclear if this is confirmation that Momoa will return for a third Aquaman or if there is one even in the pipeline.
Neither Momoa nor new DC Studios co-bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed if this is the case. Yet, Momoa recently teased the announcement of a new DC project while assuring fans about Aquaman’s future. “[I’m feeling] really f-king good. Aquaman’s not going anywhere, so it’s alright,” he said. Regardless, he is a known admirer of Lobo, leading many DCU fans to believe such a turn is imminent. Some DCU enthusiasts have gone as far as to say Momoa playing Lobo would represent an upgrade for his career, while others have expressed sadness and disappointment about the potential character switch.

Aquaman Returns to Save Atlantis
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see Momoa’s titular superhero form an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to try and save Atlantis. The sequel also features Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta). Additionally, despite unsavory details divulged during her lawsuit with Johnny Depp leading some fans to demand her removal, Amber Heard will return as Mera. Batman is also expected to appear in the Aquaman follow-up, though which one remains a mystery. Momoa confirmed he shot the movie with two different Batmans, likely referring to Ben Affleck and Micheal Keaton, but isn’t sure who will appear in the final cut.
Initially, Lost Kingdom received a Mar. 17 release date. However, the premiere was delayed several months, along with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, reportedly due to financial issues at Warner Bros. The original 2018 movie became a box-office smash, generating $1.148 billion in ticket sales, making it the second highest-grossing DC movie ever behind Wonder Woman. Both Aquaman films are directed by Saw and Insidious franchise helmer James Wan.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom premieres in theaters on Dec. 25.
