Marcus Rashford is reportedly delaying signing a new contract at Manchester United due to the ‘Ronaldo rule’.

The England international striker, hailing from the famed Red Devils academy, is only tied until the summer of 2024. No new terms have been put in place yet with a 25-year-old star who completed the best campaign of his career in 2022-23 – with 27 goals recorded in 44 appearances.

United are keen to secure an extension, but are currently caught up in a takeover saga which could see the Glazer family cede ownership of the club to the likes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe or Qatari sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani. With questions over the direction United are heading, The Sun reports that Rashford will continue to bide his time contractually.

It is also suggested that Rashford fears the ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ at Old Trafford could limit United’s next offer to him. The Red Devils got their fingers burned with Portuguese superstar Ronaldo – who was on £480,000-a-week before being released in November 2022 – and the Premier League giants are now said to have put in place a salary cap of £300,000 that would probably have to pass to retain the services of Rashford.
