The traitor among the Vegapunks has been revealed, but it’s someone who plays an important role among them, which makes dealing with them complicated.
Perhaps the biggest event of One Piece Chapter 1078, “Escape Limit,” was the reveal of the traitor among the Vegapunks. It turns out that it’s been York the Greedy setting things up on Egghead for the last three months. The fact that it’s her makes this situation much more complicated than if it had been any other Vegapunk, including the Stella.
If it were any other Vegapunk, the solution might have been simple. All the Straw Hats would have to do is either leave them to their fate at the hands of the World Government or destroy them personally; it could be something like how Kanjūrō Kurozumi was dealt with. Since most of the Vegapunks only work on analyzing and gathering data, it wouldn’t necessarily be a big loss if something happened to one of them. York, however, plays a vital role among the Satellites.
Is York Essential to the Vegapunks?
Rather than gather or analyze data, York is instead responsible for performing all of the important bodily functions of the Satellites like eating and sleeping. This provides energy for the other Vegapunks to continue their work uninterrupted. If anything happens to her and she can’t perform her functions, the Satellites who all depend on her might keel over from exhaustion or starvation.
The other Satellites might be able to eat and sleep on their own, but it hasn’t been confirmed. It also might be difficult for the ones that don’t have human anatomy; the more robotic ones like Pythagoras and Edison might need someone to eat on their behalf. Even if They dispose of York, Lilith and Atlas may have to do enough eating and for the two of them and maybe even Shaka.
If the other Satellites need York to live, then the original plan doesn’t change much. The Straw Hats will still have to take all seven Vegapunks off of Egghead to their next destination. It’s just that now they’ll have to take the Greedy one as their prisoner rather than their guest.
Of course, this also depends on the ultimate fate of Pythagoras and Shaka. They both seem to have been killed off, but most One Piece fans know to second-guess apparent deaths and expect a fake-out. If these two are either alive or can be restored, then York can be given as much of a second chance as any villain deserves. If they can’t, then she can be treated as an irredeemable monster and be given whatever’s coming to her.
That said, what exactly is going to happen now that York has been revealed as the traitor is anyone’s guess. She could either be brought aboard the Thousand Sunny as a prisoner, taken in by the World Government or simply killed off. Depending on how important her role is, however, that last option might not be preferable.
